Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) and Software-Defined Networking (SDN) are part of the overall industry shift towards network and application virtualization. With SDN and NFV based solutions, communication service providers will be able to deliver new services to their customers faster while being more efficient in both operating and capital expenditures. To speed up innovation and convergence across the telecommunications industry, as one of the platinum-level founding members of the Open Platform for Network Function Virtualization (OPNFV), Ericsson has been actively contributing to the success of the project.
Excellent progress has been made by OPNFV since its launch in September 2014 and today there are more than 30 incubated projects bringing carrier-grade features into upstream projects and validating various use-case scenarios. We have witnessed tremendous traction so far with 55 member organizations and more than 165 committers and contributors getting involved.
Brahmaputra is OPNFV’s second release and it represents a major milestone in the project’s progress. This lab-ready testing framework can be deployed directly into controlled environments to validate diverse NFV use cases. Today, the community labs around the world validate different combinations of OPNFV components.
OPNFV is successfully bringing vendors and operators together in an open environment and paving the path for a successful NFV transformation journey through collaboration and community. True to our vision of leading transformation through mobility and complementing other standardization efforts, Ericsson supports OPNFV in establishing an ecosystem that meets the needs of end users and accelerates the introduction of relevant new products and services into the global marketplace.
