The truth about AI’s presence in the workplace

The complete potential of Artificial Intelligence has not yet been realised. Soon, AI systems could potentially outperform humans at complicated tasks, reducing the risk of human error and improving the efficiency levels of organizations.

Artificial Intelligence is taking place all around us already and we should embrace its potential, as it's being rolled out across many industries to improve workplaces for the future and augment many aspects of human life. Here are my thoughts on the transformative effects that AI will have on the human condition:

  • Robots will help us to be more efficient at our jobs.
With an increase in digitization, the job market must transform and include AI support systems to assist humans with their tasks. Workers already think that having an AI to help them improve their work capacity or do simpler work tasks would be a good idea. Soon it will become essential for humans and AI to work in parallel to improve efficiency.
  • Humans will drive a symbiotic workforce.
As more organizations begin to adjust to AI technology, we can expect growth in global productivity levels, which could lead to rapidly increased economic development in developing countries, thus improving the standard of living for everyone.
  • Machines can help facilitate creative work.
Creative work is no longer exempt from machine capabilities. The role machines could play is to automate facets of human-creative tasks to increase efficiencies. For example, the textile industry in India uses public data to learn what consumers are looking for and the human workforce then applies this data to deliver designs better aligned with consumer demands.
  • We must evolve to stay relevant for Industry 4.0.
Because some believe that new technology makes it impossible to keep their skills up to date, the need for "lifelong learning" systems in schools and companies is imperative. These continuous learning systems will ensure that individuals are better equipped to benefit from AI support by becoming more flexible and adaptable in their working environment.

It is important that, as we continue our path towards the fourth industrial revolution, we embrace Artificial Intelligence in the workplace as a tool to help us become more efficient and productive.

A new approach is needed for the digital era when lean and agile organizations handle millions of individual customers' needs simultaneously. What will it take to get there?

Investment in change management to address People, Competences and Culture will be the key to succeed in the transformation to leverage the technology advantage. And the winners in this highly competitive market will be the ones that best utilize the opportunities related to technology advantages for efficiency and service revenues.
