What is Ericsson Orchestrator? Why use Ericsson Orchestrator? Ericsson Orchestrator Overview Solution Brief

In the context of ETSI NFV-MANO, Ericsson orchestrator plays the role of NFV Orchestration (NFVO), Generic VNF management (G-VNFM), Evolved VNF management (EVNFM), Service Orchestration (SO) & Transport Orchestration (WANO).

The product consists of four modules that can be independently offered:

Cloud Manager module: Performing NFVO, G-VNFM and Service Configuration Management (SCM). Enables orchestration of resources across different VIMs (OpenStack or VMware) and both intra and inter-Data Center. Support for Kubernetes is also made available to cater to 5G and IoT customers. Automates the instantiation of a Network Service described in TOSCA/JSON formats. Performs Fault & Performance management for the infrastructure by collecting and correlating alarms from the hardware and VIM. Interfaces with multi-vendor EMS/VNFM through the Or-vnfm interface. The G-VNFM function provides Life Cycle Management (LCM) of VNFs that do not have a specific VNFM.

Evolved VNF Management (EVNFM): VNF Manager (VNF LCM) has evolved into a stronger, bigger & more capable VNFM by adding in the support to manage network functions on Kubernetes along with OpenStack & vCloudDirector (VMWare). It is called Evolved VNF Manager (EVNFM). With the evolution of virtual world where VNFs will be complemented by CNFs, it is imperative that VNFM also evolves to support VNFs as well as CNFs. This will be achieved by the virtue of the added functionality of executing the LCM use cases by using Helm Charts and Docker Images along with support for SOL001 and SOL004 artefacts along with SOL003 interface toward the Cloud Manager to carry out Container Orchestration. The EVNFM has been developed to support generic workflows, which can be used by any NFs (Ericsson or 3PP) to carry out LCM use cases using the ETSI standard artefacts. Evolved VNFM includes support of ETSI standards for SOL001, SOL002, SOL003, SOL004 & IFA010 which will be the cornerstone for the openness & automation of the EVNFM.

Service Orchestration module: For new use cases around 5G, IoT and Network Slicing. Provides network slice management including LCM and configuration by using TOSCA as the template language. Enables cross-domain orchestration across Access, Transport, and Core by interfacing with different domain managers and transport SDN controllers. The advent of virtual RAN will also benefit from Service Orchestration module. Provides multi-vendor support with both built-in adaptors (e.g: ETSI SOL005) and a framework to create custom adaptors for special cases.

WAN Orchestration module: A multi-layer, multi-domain and multi-vendor hierarchical SDN controller for the orchestration of the various transport domains to build end to end connectivity with guaranteed constraints. The various domains can be managed via domain controllers from different vendors or belonging to different layer (e.g. IP/MPLS, Optical, Microwave). The transport orchestration module is capable to provision and manage both overlay services (L2/L3VPNs) and underlay Traffic Engineered infrastructure (TE tunnel, Label Switched Paths) via the domain controllers or directly interfacing the network elements.

Ericsson Orchestrator enables you to realize new revenue from new services as well as cost savings from more efficient and optimized operations. Consider Ericsson Orchestrator if you want to improve:

In the era of 5G and IoT, the efficiency and scalability of IT networks have made software-defined networks, network function virtualization and cloud technologies no longer optional for operators. As network types, service types, system stacks and infrastructure layers converge, serving the customer on demand by dynamically orchestrating all available resources must be paramount. To realize the promise of virtualization, operators must think in terms of seamless, real-time management and orchestration. This will provide the agility needed to deliver services in a new era of speed and governance on a global scale. Ericsson Orchestrator is one of the core components of the Ericsson Dynamic Orchestration solution. Dynamic Orchestration integrates Ericsson Orchestrator with other components such as Assurance and Network Management to realize the use cases. Ericsson Orchestrator is also an integral part of the Ericsson NFVi solution a pre-integrated telco grade NFV infrastructure solution.
