Ericsson Composition Engine can be used as a service capability exposure function (SCEF). SCEF is the key entity within the 3GPP architecture for service capability exposure that provides a means to securely expose the services and capabilities provided by 3GPP network interfaces through Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to Application Servers. The underlying 3GPP network interfaces and protocols can be protected and abstracted by being controlled or mapped to appropriate network interfaces and protocols for Massive IoT.

Beyond the service capability exposure of 3GPP core network functions, Ericsson Composition Engine also offers additional IoT capabilities, for example, Device Communication capabilities that provide bidirectional communication between applications and IoT devices through key IoT technologies such as LwM2M and MQTT and so on; Device Management capabilities that provide remote configuration and management for IoT devices and gateways. The Developer and Partner Self-Service in Ericsson Composition Engine provides the Digital Front-end to enable IoT device management journey.

Ericsson Composition Engine is mostly focused on the 3GPP networks with NarrowBand IoT (NB-IoT) and Category M1 (CAT-M1) for IoT applications.

Finally the composition engine is enriched further with API Gateway and Management capabilities. As many players not only in internet and telecom industries but also in sectors such as automotive industry, transport industry, health care industry, and mass media industry are paying increasing attentions to sharing and engaging their own data and services to external partners by means of API, API gateway is drawing intense interest from these players as an indispensable functional element to control and protect the APIs for exposing data and services.

The API Gateway and Management is designed to provide a centralized front end on which API providers can publish and expose their APIs to external API consumers, which include other telcom operators, the enterprise customers, 3rd party OTTs, application and content providers, in a secure, controllable, traceable, scalable, and measurable way.

This solution also provides a management platform for API operators to manage partners and applications within the product life cycle. The Developer Portal allows developers to browse all exposed APIs. Developers can get authorization of access the selected APIs, and try out the API in an interactive API console, and monitor the usage of subscribed APIs.
