Innovation Research

Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) inaugurated the Ericsson Research Turkey Lab in Istanbul on December 4, 2018.

Ericsson Research is a global organization that develops new patentable technologies and system concepts, which drive the standardization of future mobile systems, innovating and re-shaping the industry 5-10 years ahead. Ericsson Research has operations in ten countries on four continents, and now in 11 countries by adding Turkey.

TÜBİTAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) established the TEYDEB 1515 -Frontier R&D Laboratories Support Program which is an innovative support program to facilitate top performing, leading R&D intense companies to establish an/or expand their R&D laboratories in Turkey. Ericsson Research is the first research laboratory in the Turkish ICT sector supported by TÜBİTAK’s program.

Ericsson Research Turkey Lab is set to significantly contribute to the future in terms of scientific production and technological knowledge. New and innovative research topics will enable Turkish researchers to contribute to international projects while providing great opportunities for producing new articles, papers and patents, as well as directly contributing to worldwide standards.

President of TÜBİTAK, Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal said: “At TÜBİTAK, we have established the Frontier R&D Laboratory Support Program so as to encourage the world's leading technology firms to set up research labs in Turkey to design the technologies of the future. The objective of this program is to promote the development in Turkey of not existing technologies but rather of high-risk technologies which are set to blaze a trail. We hope that the Research Laboratory founded by Ericsson will gather highly qualified human resources in the field of telecoms, facilitate collaboration efforts, and lead the way in research and innovation for the technologies of the future; as such, we are immensely pleased to extend our support to this laboratory.”

Deputy Minister of Turkey Ministry of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Kacır said “We want to see Turkey amongst the 10 largest economies in the world. With our ‘National Technology Move’ which we have developed in the frame of this vision, we are implementing our policies to capture the paradigm shifts in technology processes and to realize the necessary structural transformations. One of the critical constituents of our ‘National Technology Move’ is also making Turkey as a center of attraction for the purpose of bringing exceptional researchers and scientists to Turkey. As part of the Frontier R&D Laboratory Support Program, we attract the R&D capabilities of the world's leading companies to our country. While realizing their innovative ideas, they convey their know-how to our ecosystem. As of now, four companies have been benefiting from these supports and continue to evaluate the potential of our country in the best way. The Ericsson Research Laboratory constitutes a great example. We are well aware that human capital is the most important component of sustainable development. In this context, researchers coming to our country with the International Leading Researchers Program; will have the opportunity not only to work within the university, but also to work in the private sector and build their own teams.”

Rafiah Ibrahim, Head of Ericsson Middle East & Africa said: “We are taking today an important step with the opening of Ericsson’s Research Lab in Turkey, marking its 11th country globally. This inauguration comes as an endorsement of Turkey’s innovation, entrepreneurial spirit and the great talents of this country. We look forward to continue working together with our local partners to seize the opportunities this lab will bring.”

Ericsson Turkey is also collaborating with more than 70 local institutions, including universities, and has been conducting 140 R&D projects.

The inauguration event was attended by top executives from several organizations along with key government officials and industry players.
