Mobile network data traffic continues to grow year-on-year
Key findings
Mobile network data traffic grew 21 percent between Q3 2023 and Q3 2024.
Video traffic is expected to account for 74 percent of all mobile data traffic at the end of 2024.
Reasons for mobile data traffic growth include a rising number of smartphone subscriptions and an increase in the average data volume per subscription.
The quarter-on-quarter mobile network data traffic growth between Q2 2024 and Q3 2024 was around 4 percent. Total monthly global mobile network data traffic reached 157 EB.
Mobile data traffic growth is being driven by both rising smartphone subscriptions and increasing average data volume per subscription, fueled primarily by increased viewing of video content. At the end of 2024, video traffic is anticipated to account for 74 percent of all mobile data traffic.
Figure 4 shows the total global monthly network data traffic from Q3 2017 to Q3 2024, along with year-on-year percentage growth for mobile network data traffic.
