A key use of the industrial cloud is the analysis of information flowing from industrial devices in order to generate insights and produce business impacts. Such analysis must not be distorted by inadvertently or deliberately modified data inputs. Verifying the integrity of the data inputs before using the results can, therefore, be a key trust anchor. For industry verticals under regulatory scrutiny by groups such as NERC/FERC, the integrity of the data from a particular industrial system may also be a compliance or audit point.

Ericsson's Blockchain Data Integrity service can be used to ensure the integrity of input data as it is processed in an analytics application. The data is signed as it is input to the industrial cloud. From that point on, the integrity of the data is monitored continuously, at the time interval required by the business. The integrity can also be verified at any specific time. The goal is to provide business, regulatory, and audit assurances that the information being used as input has not been altered in any way. The results of analysis, whether a report or a new machine configuration, can also be verified for integrity using the same service. This provides assurances that the chain of information—from the equipment connected to the industrial cloud, through the analytics engine, to the point where the business results were applied—has not been tampered with.

A key use for Blockchain Data Integrity is assuring the safe and accurate transfer of medical records so that no tampering takes place. On use case could be related to patient prescription data. A medical practitioner creates a prescription, which is signed by the data integrity assurance service. When the patient arrives, the pharmacy can verify that the prescription has not been modified since it was created. This level of integrity can reduce errors in transmission and fraudulent prescription activity. In a case where an application is used to determine prescription interactions, those results could also be signed for integrity purposes and used to protect patients in the event of a dispute.
