5G open for business

We are now starting to see commercial 5G networks going live. Previous generations were focused on consumer and personal communications but now 5G will serve consumers, enterprises and take the internet of things to the next level, where superior connectivity is a prerequisite. Initially, 5G will be a capacity enhancer in metropolitan areas and enhanced mobile broadband and fixed wireless access will be ways for operators to address explosive traffic growth.

What is 5G?

Ericsson in 5G – from blue print to reality

From 5G standardization to today’s commercialization, Ericsson has been a key player in making 5G networks a commercial reality.

  • Ericsson is driving 5G standardization and was the largest contributor to the standardization body in 3GPP during 2018. Ericsson is committed to rapidly applying these standards to our technology development.
  • We have achieved interoperability between Ericsson Radio System commercial radios and the 5G test devices of our ecosystem partners such as Qualcomm and Intel on all main spectrum bands for initial 5G launches – most of them as first in the industry.
  • We have a flexible portfolio with our 5G platform that enables telecom operators to smoothly switch on 5G on their existing 4G networks. The Ericsson Radio System hardware has been 5G-ready since 2015 and can also be used for 5G NR with a remote software installation. This means we have already shipped more than 3 million 5G-ready radios to our customers worldwide.
  • We were first with commercial live networks in the United States and have already deployed operational 5G networks based on commercial equipment in Europe, Australia and Asia. To date, Ericsson has publicly announced 5G contracts with more than 10 named customers. In addition to this, we have over 40 operator memorandums of understanding worldwide and we are collaborating with more than 40 universities and technology institutes as well as 30 industry partners.

Building 5G Networks

5G is happening, now. With the first commercial launches underway, we are preparing and equipping mobile service providers to go live.

5G trials

A royal 5G network

Ericsson and Telia are providing Sweden’s first 5G network – now live at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm.

Ericsson 5G powers environmentally friendly self-driving vehicles

Ericsson, Einride and Telia partner to show driverless trucks are one step closer to being safe for public roads.

5G ultra-low latency propels jet engine manufacturing

Together with the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology we trialed how 5G can improve manufacturing processes. Our 5G trial system achieved ultra-low latency of close to 1 millisecond, allowing for real time monitoring and control.

5G live in Korea

In February 2018 Ericsson and Korea Telecom together with Intel conducted a 5G trial in a dense urban environment in the center of Seoul.

Insights and reports

Ericsson Mobility Report: November 2018

In this edition of the Ericsson Mobility Report, we highlight that mobile data traffic grew 79 percent between Q3 2017 and Q3 2018—the highest growth rate since 2013. The report also explores the role of Fixed Wire Access as one of the early use cases of 5G, cellular connectivity in smart manufacturing, and why streaming video contributes so much to mobile traffic growth.

5G consumer business: ready when you are

Mobile broadband is the first use case for 5G. Its introduction will bring increased capacity and improved customer experience. Explore how 5G can improve your consumer business.

The 5G business case for enhanced mobile broadband

Enhanced mobile broadband will be the first commercial application of 5G and can help operators improve their consumer business. Our study reveals that the evolution to 5G can enable a 10 times lower cost per gigabyte than current 4G networks.

5G security - enabling a trustworthy 5G system

Connected devices and mobile applications require wireless network access that is resilient, secure and able to protect individuals’ right to privacy. The 5G system is designed with these requirements in mind. Read our whitepaper.

5G deployment considerations

Ericsson’s network technology enables evolution from 4G to full 5G deployment through natural, step-wise implementation that balances investments, revenue streams and competitiveness while minimizing risk. Our paper outlines how. Read the new edition with expanded sections on core network evolution and spectrum strategies.

The guide to capturing the 5G-IoT business potential

We turned our insights into a comprehensive guide for operators on how to start their 5G-IoT business. We outline the opportunities, the challenges and the case studies that are emerging from the digitalization of industries.

5G for industries

5G for industry remote operation

5G will support transformation of all industries, and Ericsson Research works on concepts and prototypes together with industry partners. One example of an industry use case is Industry remote operation, which we are exploring together with ABB. In this video we present the demonstration of robot remote control with haptic feedback and explain some of the key requirements and technologies involved.

5G for the mining industry

To be relevant for any industry, 5G must support any service or application required. Once you implement 5G and support these use cases the innovation starts.

5G for platooning

The transportation industry is striving to improve their efficiency and reduce carbon footprint. One way to achieve this is to have trucks driving at close distances, creating so called truck platoons, tightly coordinated through vehicle to vehicle communication. Ericsson collaborate with Scania to understand 5G requirements of platooning.

5G for traffic management

Traffic management is the system that will make our transport system smart. We want to make an intelligent transport system to manage and proactively design traffic flows for a better transport services and traffic environment. To be able to create this connected, cooperative and automated traffic system we need 5G to handle this mission critical communications. So eventually it will be the bus catching you and not the other way around.

The complete 5G Platform

The complete 5G Platform

With Ericsson’s constantly expanding 5G platform, communication service providers can get ready for 5G and grow 4G capacity in their network now. By adding capabilities to our 5G Radio Access, 5G transport and Cloud Core portfolios together with our management and orchestration, digital BSS and network services, we offer an outstanding 5G solution that is both extensive and flexible. This ensures a smooth and cost-effective 4G to 5G migration. And it enables you to offer eMBB and FWA 5G services as well as make the most of the upcoming opportunities with IoT and industrial applications.
