Ericsson Lean Carrier is a software upgrade for mobile networks. It uses the ultra-lean design concepts Ericsson is developing for 5G networks adapted for existing LTE network deployments.

The basic principle of 5G ultra-lean design is to minimize any transmissions not directly related to the delivery of user data. Ericsson Lean Carrier works by reducing the interference caused by reference signaling across the LTE network. This results in speed and service quality benefits for mobile users. Ericsson Lean Carrier also increases the amount of time during which the higher 64 Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) and 256 QAM encoding schemes can be utilized by the network, further improving performance and app coverage.
