The Ericsson Unified Data Management (UDM) and Policy portfolio offers solutions for Subscriber Data Management (SDM) and Policy Management towards telecommunication’s operators but also towards other segments as enterprises and verticals. Our offerings include advanced solutions to support the evolution of telecom core networks towards Cloud and 5G and IoT.
The foundation of UDM and Policy is on the subscription (human or machine) and policy data stored in the network. The Ericsson solutions in this area allows the ultimate experience to service providers when storing and managing all this data as well as provides the right tools to help extracting the maximum value from the data itself.

Subscription management & Data consolidation
Subscriber Data Management (SDM) solutions lays in the heart of modern telecommunication networks providing identity management and granting users access to the different network services. The Ericsson offering for SDM is called User Data Consolidation (UDC).
The Ericsson UDC solution deliveries a state-of-the-art implementation of Data Layered Architecture (DLA) technology providing more efficiency to manage the data having the users and not individual types of accesses or services, into focus. This is what we at Ericsson call Customer-Centric Networks.
In a Customer-Centric Network, efficiency is key. The UDC solution eliminates the complexity of managing subscriptions by consolidating subscriber information from the different network silos into one common repository, creating a Unified Profile. This allows for a simpler and more scalable network topology, more efficiency on managing the network database resources and it also gives more flexibility to introduce new services.
Security is another key aspect in SDM. The Ericsson UDM and Policy portfolio offers a wide range of solutions caring for the security both on the user access to the network and services as well as to protect the user’s identity privacy. The Ericsson UDM and Policy offerings for security includes:
· Equipment Identity Register (EIR) to control mobile equipment’s access to the network.
· Authentication Center (AUC) (part of Ericsson’s Home Location Register - HLR product) and Authentication Vector Generator (AVG) (part of Ericsson’s Home Subscriber Server – HSS product) to grant users access to 2G, 3G, 4G and IMS services.
· Authentication, Authorization and Accounting (AAA) (part of Ericsson’s IPWorks product) to manage access to non-3GPP networks such as CDMA2000, WiMAX, Wi-Fi, as well as mobility between these networks and LTE accesses.
· User Profile Gateway (UPG) to care for the privacy of user’s identity and data when exposing data to 3rd parties with the aim to monetize the data asset from UDC systems.
The Ericsson Service-Aware Policy Controller (SAPC) product is conceived based on the 3GPP standardized Policy and Charging Rules Function (PCRF). SAPC is responsible for the policy control and charging rules that define the services and applications supported in mobile, fixed and converged telecom networks. SAPC is key to secure the network behavior when users access data services, such as, authorizing the services, assigning the QoS of the data-session and the Charging that shall be applied; and performs a business critical role for monetization and differentiation of operator’s mobile and converged broadband commercial packages.
In a system that handles an enormous and diverse amount of data from users and devices attached to the network, the stored data asset is of a huge value but one needs to have a proper set of tools to unlock the value behind this data.
Ericsson UDC (via User Profile Gateway component) and SAPC solutions includes embedded data exposure and analytics capabilities to unlocks the value of the data asset by offering a simpler and quicker visualization of a customer’s data stored in the system. It allows not only to address new use cases to improve network automation and operational performances, but it potentially enables new revenue streams leveraging on more personalized services driven by a better insight from customer’s behaviors and needs.
