The increasing demand for mobile broadband capacity and the high value of radio spectrum has resulted in radio features requiring innovative network configurations. One such configuration is the colocation of baseband units in a Centralized RAN (C-RAN) architecture.
This has facilitated the use of Coordinated Multipoint (CoMP) and Carrier Aggregatio (CA) for expanding and optimizing radio coverage. As a result, the link between remote radio units and baseband units is no longer a simple one-to-one relationship due to the increase in distance and the subsequent transmission latency which impacts radio performance.
In C-RAN architectures, baseband radio CPRI transport between the centralized baseband units and the remote radio units is required. This network is referred to as fronthaul. Its function is to enable the baseband units to seamlessly connect to the remote radio units without impacting radio performance. In LTE C-RAN architectures, Backhaul is the IP network from the centralized baseband units to the Evolve Packet Core.
