Ericsson Fronthaul

The increasing demand for mobile broadband capacity and the high value of radio spectrum has resulted in radio features requiring innovative network configurations. One such configuration is the colocation of baseband units in a Centralized RAN (C-RAN) architecture.

This has facilitated the use of Coordinated Multipoint (CoMP) and Carrier Aggregatio (CA) for expanding and optimizing radio coverage. As a result, the link between remote radio units and baseband units is no longer a simple one-to-one relationship due to the increase in distance and the subsequent transmission latency which impacts radio performance.

In C-RAN architectures, baseband radio CPRI transport between the centralized baseband units and the remote radio units is required. This network is referred to as fronthaul. Its function is to enable the baseband units to seamlessly connect to the remote radio units without impacting radio performance. In LTE C-RAN architectures, Backhaul is the IP network from the centralized baseband units to the Evolve Packet Core.

Ericsson Fronthaul 6000 is a flexible and complete portfolio supporting high performance E2E solutions for low latency transport of CPRI, OBSAI and Ethernet. It consists of Fronthaul 6080 passive solution with DWDM pluggable transceivers and passive optical components, Fronthaul 6080 active solutions for managed DWDM networking and Fronthaul 6392 microwave radio.

Ericsson Fronthaul 6000’s low latency, high capacity radio baseband transport enables the Ericsson Radio System to implement its superior radio performance techniques for precision coordination of the radio network for maximizing the utilization of the spectrum in a C-RAN architecture.

Fiber Fronthaul

Mobile traffic volumes are expected to increase exponentially through 2020 and beyond. The evolution of LTE to LTE-Advanced and 5G will increasingly demand higher capacity and lower latency ...

Microwave Fronthaul Units

The connection between the radio and the baseband is referred to as fronthaul, connected through a CPRI interface. Microwave Fronthaul is a great complement to fiber.
