Ericsson Radio System's architecture scales to increasing demands on the road to 5G with multi-standard, multi-band and multi-layer technology. The system gives network operators the infrastructure they need to support growing mobile data traffic needs. The new portfolio can reduce total cost of ownership (TCO) by 20% compared to previous products.
The architecture of the Ericsson Radio System is a modular, end-to-end solution that incorporates a broad range of products including macro radios, baseband, small cell products, IP routing modules, microwave nodes, installation rail, antenna systems and other site equipment. The flexibility inherent in the architecture enables fast and efficient rollout.
Ericsson Radio System hardware is designed to deliver the most energy-efficient solutions while maintaining performance leadership. Innovations across the board, such as one-bolt installation, allow the Ericsson Radio System to ease site acquisition issues and reduce total cost of ownership.
Forward-thinking and fully compatible with Ericsson's existing RBS 6000 portfolio, the new system protects operator investments and supports site co-existence. An innovative rail system, featuring one-bolt installation, adapts to any site with zero floor footprint. It installs in the tightest spaces thanks to airflow innovations and can be adapted to any site. Radio modules can for instance be mounted vertically or horizontally on a rail, flat on a cable ladder or behind an antenna. Thanks to a potential 5-time reduction in wind load, the equipment is lighter and more durable for tower deployment.
The new, powerful baseband units in the Ericsson Radio System use the same baseband hardware for GSM, WCDMA and LTE (FDD and TDD) and the same unit can even be used in multi-mode operation, running two standards simultaneously. Baseband units can be used flexibly in distributed and centralized architectures and support Ericsson’s Elastic RAN concept. These work seamlessly together with wired and microwave-based fronthaul and backhaul solutions. The baseband units have built-in transport functionality and can be simply combined with an IP Router for additional packet transport functionality.
To facilitate easy selection of the right modules from the different product areas and simply build complete sites, we have create groups based on different site types, like for instance ‘indoor’ or ‘outdoor’ etc. These groups are called ‘Series’ and start with a unique number.
