Over the last 10 years, high definition television (HDTV) has been replacing standard definition television as the expected viewing format for television programming. While HDTV provides an enhanced user experience, ultra high definition television (UHDTV) matches the full capabilities of the human visual system (HVS) and therefore promises even greater consumer appeal.
Consumer demand for UHDTV is already showing huge potential. Studies show that ultra-high definition technologies are already important to many consumers, even though the vast majority have not yet experienced UHDTV.
Increased resolution is not the only way that service providers can improve television viewing experiences for their users. Future UHDTV can also offer high dynamic range, wide color gamut and high frame rate.
