You need to see how 5G will become your reality at Mobile World Congress Americas

Using sports to show off the crazy cool features of 5G makes for some amazing video – see professional American football players playing with virtual reality (VR) goggles on, or professional basketball stars doing the same at the NBA All Star Game.  And – braving even faster speeds – here’s someone in Canada catching a baseball via VR.

You have to have incredibly low latency in your network to pull these demos off – we’re talking single-digit millisecond latency, which seems like real-time to our brains.

But, realistically, most of us won’t be playing sports with VR goggles on in the backyard or down at the playground.  So, if you like to watch sports, what’s 5G going to mean for you in the near future?

We got a glimpse of this earlier this year at the US Open in cooperation with AT&T, Intel and FOX Sports.  On the challenging par-3 seventh hole at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, two cameras transmitted 4K HDR images via 5G through a production truck, allowing FOX Sports to take advantage of a true 5G live test environment for 4K image capture, processing and streaming video to multiple platforms.

For FOX Sports, 5G is going to mean a lot less cable to stretch around the golf course.  It will reduce live production costs and help scale ultra-high-definition broadcasting.

4K video over 5G for consumers

5G will also mean that you get to watch the 4K video on your mobile device.  But 5G is also so fast and so reliable that it will make fixed wireless a real challenger in the broadband market, streaming 4K video wirelessly to your big screen TV as well.

And it’s not just the quality either.  You’ll be able to choose what camera angles you like, or if you want information overlaid on the screen, or if you want to watch in VR or not.

Ericsson provided the 5G radios, baseband, simulated network core, and 4K video encoder and decoder for the trial. We’ll have a demo on this US Open experience at Mobile World Congress Americas in Los Angeles.  You don’t want to miss it.

Immersive mixed reality. Holographic calls. Remotely operating machinery from half a world away. This is the promise of 5G. And while sports are a fun way to illustrate the possibilities, they are far from the only ones.

At the event, we’ll focus on the home, efficiency, consumer experience, business opportunities and being first.  But none of these things stands alone. Instead 5G is about creating synergies that will allows us to build entirely new ecosystems and economies.  This big picture is why 5G could be the next great tech pivot, on the order of not just 4G – which brought us streaming video and the app economy – but the internet itself.

Yet like 4G, 5G will only be as good as the network it’s carried on. With global mobile data traffic expected to grow eight times by the end of 2023, according to the most recent Ericsson Mobility Report, there is a need for a holistic approach across radio, core and transport networks that enables service providers to evolve to new 5G capabilities at a speed that matches their own business strategy.
