This tutorial will walk you through the different steps involved in developing a Parlay X application using JAX-RPC, which comes bundled with Sun's Java web services developer pack (JWSDP). By the end, you will understand how to develop a simple SMS application using Parlay X services exposed by any service provider or network operator.
Parlay X is a set of standardized web services that provides developers with high-level access to the telecom functionality available in an operator's domain. The telecom functionality includes short messaging, multimedia messaging, call-control capabilities, terminal location and status and so on. The standards Parlay X and Parlay/OSA are defined by the Parlay Group, which is a consortium of different telecom vendors, network operators and IT vendors. Ericsson, as one of the Parlay/OSA and Parlay X vendors, provides the implementation of Parlay/OSA and Parlay X standards in the form of the Ericsson Network Resource Gateway. If you are not familiar with Parlay and NRG, refer to the Parlay section on the Ericsson Mobility World web site. The high-level picture for Parlay X application development looks like this:
