A Crisis of Inclusion

With most of the gathered participants in agreement about the importance of education as the foundation of society, discussions often turned to the 67 million children in the world who receive no education at all, as well as those receiving primary schooling, but of very poor quality. This is one area where the ICT sector plays a key enabling role, said Professor Sachs.

“The whole world faces a crisis of inclusion,” said Sachs, referring to the digital and educational divides that exclude the world’s developed and developing regions from full participation in our modern globalized society. “As leaders in the ICT industry, all of you gathered here have the power to make a positive change. That’s why I’m here.”

Sachs said he bases many of his insights on years of research into the economic models of some of the least developed parts of Africa. “I’ve seen how mobile broadband can change schools and affect literacy. This is the only technology I know of that has proven to be low cost and reach the poorest areas – very quickly.”
