Technology author and consultant Tomi T. Ahonen says the launch of 3G in China has opened up a world of opportunity for applications. With 51 percent of Chinese mobile users downloading applications, compared with 22 percent of Western European users, he says the number of application stores is mushrooming in China.
China Unicom, the nation's second largest mobile operator with 162 million subscribers, expects annual application downloads to rise from 10 million in 2010 to 680 million in 2012.
The consumer dynamics of the Chinese market are analyzed by Michael Welch, head of product development at Happylatte, a Beijing-based game design studio. Welch says that games and navigation applications are popular among Chinese users, and that commuting patterns have contributed to usage growth.
