By 2020, Ericsson envisions there will be more than 50 billion connected devices. A significant number of these devices will be machine-to-machine (M2M) and connected consumer electronics (CCE), using mobile networks for data communications.
With such large volumes of M2M and CCE devices, the SIM card – along with its conventional procedures and processes for managing subscriptions – will no longer be a cost-efficient solution for M2M remote-subscription management. This article describes a potential alternative based on the concept of an M2M communications identity module (MCIM). The MCIM solution meets new market requirements generated by the CCE industry as well as industries developing M2M solutions. Based on open standards and mature security technologies, the proposed solution is trustworthy, scalable, sustainable, future-proof, cost-efficient, and makes mobile networks a more attractive means of communication for the M2M and CCE industries.
