Ericsson is the main driver of Packet Core development. The company was, for example, the first supplier to implement 3G Direct Tunnel in a live network (, June 2008). The feature enables operators to make significant gains in network capacity and therefore reduce capital expenditure.
Ericsson also actively contributes to standardization work in the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), in particular the specification of the Evolved Packet Core – a flat IP-based network architecture that simplifies network operation, reduces latency and improves scalability.
3G Direct Tunnel and Evolved Packet Core are implemented through software only – they do not require new hardware. This eliminates the impact of functional upgrades in terms of traffic disturbances and protects earlier investments through the reuse of installed nodes.
