Managing rapid growth in mobile data traffic

Ericsson’s widely deployed Packet Core solutions provide the capacity, functionality and superior performance needed for next generation broadband.

Offering

Ericsson’s complete Packet Core portfolio is a solid foundation for delivering mobile data services with telecom quality. The solutions are not only optimized to handle the dramatic uptake of mobile broadband but to secure a smooth evolution to all-IP networks.

A key component is Ericsson’s Aware Networking features, which make it possible to secure the quality of premium services and charge for them in a truly flexible way. Virtually all types of traffic can be identified by means of advanced deep-packet inspection and heuristic analysis (similar to pattern recognition).

The Packet Core offering includes:

  • Core network nodes for cost-effective, reliable and secure operations
  • Mobile Packet Backbone Network – a field-proven IP-infrastructure solution based on a verified design, supporting multiple types of services, such as mobile broadband, mobile softswitch and IMS.
  • Service-Aware Charging and Control – a traffic-inspection solution with functionality for efficient management of network resources and flexible charging based on volume, content and events.

Market leader

Ericsson is the leading supplier of Packet Core solutions for mobile networks. More than 270 operators in 130 countries rely on Ericsson’s Packet Core solutions to generate revenue from new and compelling multimedia services.

Technology leader

Ericsson is the main driver of Packet Core development. The company was, for example, the first supplier to implement 3G Direct Tunnel in a live network (, June 2008). The feature enables operators to make significant gains in network capacity and therefore reduce capital expenditure.

Ericsson also actively contributes to standardization work in the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), in particular the specification of the Evolved Packet Core – a flat IP-based network architecture that simplifies network operation, reduces latency and improves scalability.

3G Direct Tunnel and Evolved Packet Core are implemented through software only – they do not require new hardware. This eliminates the impact of functional upgrades in terms of traffic disturbances and protects earlier investments through the reuse of installed nodes.

Reliable, efficient operations

With Ericsson’s proven solutions, new services can be introduced quickly and effectively in live networks.

The Mobile Packet Backbone Network solution ensures data traffic is carried in a reliable and predictable way between the Packet Core nodes. Complemented with the Service Aware Charging and Control solution, sufficient bandwidth is allocated to premium services and  charged for according to different parameters.

This ensures that the requirements of different services, as well as the expectations of subscribers are fulfilled, leading to greater satisfaction and loyalty and the possibility to attract new users.

Grow the business

A cost-effective and reliable Packet Core solution is key not only to delivering services with the quality users expect, but also to providing the ease-of-use and transparent charging that drives uptake.

All Ericsson’s Packet Core solutions are designed to provide reliability and scalability, giving operators the flexibility needed to meet growing demand for mobile broadband services and expand into new markets.
