GSM Radio Access Network Products

The world's most used GSM portfolio

Based on a future-proof platform and offering superior radio quality and in-service performance, Ericsson’s GSM Radio Access Network is a strong basis for profitable business.

Offering description

Ericsson’s GSM RAN portfolio consists of:

  • Base Station Controllers (BSC) and Transcoder and Rate Adapter Controllers (TRC)
  • Radio Base Stations (RBS) and RBS Site Solutions
  • Transport Solutions
  • Operational Support System ().
In addition to this a complete set of GSM RAN Software Features are offered.

Ericsson's GSM RAN portfolio supports all existing GSM frequencies – 800, 900, 1800 and 1900MHz.

Base Station Controller (BSC) and Transcoder and Rate Adapter Controller (TRC)

The GSM BSC controls the actions of the radio base stations and the TRCs. It ensures connections are established and maintained and that radio spectrum is utilized efficiently.

The Ericsson High-Density BSC is a new hardware generation, based on the state-of-the-art AXE platform, for the Ericsson BSC introducing a small footprint, low power consumption and support for up to 2048 TRXs.

Radio Base Stations (RBS) and RBS Site solutions

The RBS acts as the interface between the mobile device and the network. Ericsson's RBS 2000 family consists of a range of base stations from dense urban to rural applications. It is characterized by excellent performance, a small footprint and flexible usage, combined with a broad range of configuration options to cope with both capacity and coverage.

Ericsson RBS Site solutions are based on site products needed for a complete RBS site with high quality and optimized network performance.

Site solutions include :

  • Antenna systems (antennas, TMAs, filters, feeders)
  • In-building systems
  • Installation materials and tools
  • Power for outdoor and indoor RBSs
  • Positioning and synchronization products
  • Transmission.
Ericsson can support operators to acquire, engineer and develop their RBS sites through a range of support offerings, including Ericsson Site Development solutions, and professional services in the area of network deployment and integration.

Transport Solutions

Efficient transport is a key element in limiting operational expenditure. Standard E1/T1 transmission as well as IP-based transport is supported in the Ericsson GSM RAN.

Operational Support System (OSS)

The Ericsson network-management solution can be divided into two areas:

  • Element management
  • OSS-RC.
Element Management handles one node at a time, while OSS-RC is used to manage multiple network elements. The Ericsson OSS handles both radio and core nodes. The functionality and tools in OSS-RC provide support for every network stage from rollout or expansion, to tuning and day-to-day management.
