Richer communication made easy

Users want an enriched communication experience, anywhere, anytime and to any device. Ericsson IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) makes it possible.

Meeting market needs

Today’s users want to share their everyday experiences anytime, anywhere and are increasingly turning to multimedia services to generate the sense of closeness and community belonging they are searching for.

This enriched experience, which allows users to share their emotions and experiences in a vivid and interactive way, requires a new approach both in services and the technology that supports them.

With IMS, operators can build on their installed base to develop cost-effective networks that allow the convergence of voice and data, regardless of access type. These converged networks provide a valuable first step towards the vision of an all-IP environment.

Solution description

Next generation networks need to give users the reliability and quality of today’s telecom network as well as the flexibility and speed of the internet.

IMS is the key to building networks that can seamlessly combine ongoing communication sessions with multimedia elements, such as sharing live video while talking.

Ericsson IMS Solution is a complete end-to-end offering for fixed and mobile operators that combines media such as voice, text, pictures and video while giving users the tools to personalize their communication experience.

The solution includes IMS core, standardized services, enablers and applications such as:

  • Rich Communication Suite (RCS)
  • Presence, Group and Data Management (PGM)
  • Push-to-talk over Cellular (PoC)
  • Multimedia Telephony (MMTel)
  • weShare
  • Connected Home
  • Business Communiction Suite
  • Multimedia Ringback Solution

Market leader

Analyst firms ABI Research and Pyramid Research both rank Ericsson as a market leader in IMS.

According to a March 2008 report by ABI Research: “Ericsson holds the top position in the delivery of core IMS infrastructure and has a global presence in terms of IMS deployments.”  Based on the number of published contracts for each vendor, and the relative size of each contract, Ericsson has a market share of 48 percent.

Ericsson is also a key participant in the IMS ecosystem – a combination of telecom, internet, terminal and media industry players that actively work together to drive the IMS vision – through initiatives such as the Ericsson Developer Program, which supports the application developer community to create IMS-based applications and services.

User benefits

Ericsson IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) realizes the vision of any service, on any screen, anywhere.

With IMS-based services users can enrich their communication by combining various media – voice, text, pictures and video – to truly share their everyday experiences, in real time. And by including “presence” information, they can better control how, where and by whom they will be contacted.

Adapted to each individual's preference, IMS enables a consistent experience across multiple access technologies, user devices and geographic locations for business or private use.

Generate new revenue

Ericsson IMS helps generate new revenue by:

  • Increasing business opportunities
IMS networks and IMS products are already established on the market, providing basic conditions for service and business innovations, new markets, new business models and economies of scale.
  • Offering new, attractive consumer offerings
A mature IMS market and rich ecosystem provide new and innovative applications and attract new consumers.
  • Providing top-line revenue through IMS service packages
IMS reduces churn in internet services and competing operators by offering attractive services with a blend of applications and enablers with multi-access possibilities.

IMS is the evolution standard agreed by the industry (3GPP, 3GPP2, GSMA, OMA, TISPAN) and is the way to gain global interconnect and interoperability. Telecom operators can actually reach the fixed and mobile community of 4 billion users with new mass market services.
