Ericsson and ntl trial first ADSL2+ turbo powered broadband in the UK

May 10, 2005, 09:30 (CEST)

Using the turbo powered broadband capability ntl has been able to demonstrate both ultra-high speed Internet services and the successful delivery of high-definition television (HDTV) via the IP stream.

"We are very excited to be the first operator to trial turbo powered broadband in the UK through Ericsson's EDA IP DSLAM solution, and to explore the possibilities this opens up for new services for our consumer and business customers," said Bill Goodland, Director of Internet at ntl. "The technology has allowed us to demonstrate the full potential of our access network which has both copper and coax connections to our customers."

The ntl trial, the first in the UK using ADSL2+, has proven broadband connections with downstream line rates in excess of 18Mbps without any modification to their copper access infrastructure.

"Ericsson is pleased to be partnering with ntl, a leading consumer broadband operator in the UK, and in enabling them to be the first in the UK to trial these leading edge capabilities," says Peter Linder, Technical Director, Wireline, Ericsson. "This trial confirms Ericsson's leading position as broadband provider for IP based Ethernet solutions and triple play applications."

Under the trial, Ericsson provides ntl with its modular EDA IP DSLAM, and an advanced feature set for IP video services across a broadband network based on ADSL2+ and Gb Ethernet.
