Enabling communication for all

Enabling communication for all

Connectivity for economic growth and improved quality of life.

For developing regions keen to seize the opportunities of the Networked Society, ICT facilitates education, financial services, health, safety and security, and livelihoods, in support of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). With more than six billion mobile subscriptions, innovative approaches are still needed to address the needs of the “last” billion users at the base of the pyramid. Ericsson takes a holistic approach by combining technology, global presence and experience in public-private partnerships. By combining competency in developing new business models, with novel approaches we can replicate and scale successful initiatives for the greatest possible impact on the Millennium Development Goals.

Catalyzing the market:

To catalyze the market, we support the development of innovative approaches that illustrate the benefits of connectivity or already provide commercial benefit. This helps prove the business case for broadband as a means to enable positive change. Learn more about the initiatives and projects we work on demonstrating Technology for Good.

Our key initiatives

Millenium Villages

The Millennium Villages

Ericsson has since 2007 provided connectivity to the Millennium Villages project, a community-led initiative that aims to lift rural African communities out of poverty. The project currently works with 79 villages in 11 countries, and tackles challenges ranging from health and education to agriculture and business development.

Connect To Learn

Connect To Learn is a global education initiative founded by Ericsson, the Earth Institute at Columbia University, and Millennium Promise. Its aim is to channel the power of ICT to enable a 21st century education to students everywhere, with a focus on secondary education for girls. It is improving access to education for thousands of young people across Africa and Latin America.

Refugee Reconnection

Refugee reconnection

A mobile phone application developed by Ericsson helps refugees find missing family members, using an anonymous database created and maintained by non-profit group Refugees United. 100.000 of refugees worldwide have registered for the service, and families are now reconnecting.

Connecting the Amazon

Connecting the Amazon

Remote communities in the Amazon now have connectivity for the first time through project Conexão Amazon (Amazon Connected). Ericsson worked with operator Vivo to provide mobile broadband to enable m-health and m-learning to 30,000 people in Belterra and expanded the project other villages.

Mobile Innovation Village

Mobile Innovation Village

The Mobile Innovation Village (MIV) initiative is aimed at empowering rural communities in Malaysia with ICT. The joint initiative between the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission in partnership with operator Maxis, University Malaysia Sarawak and Ericsson, will address socio-economic development through e-education and e-health among other services.

All Chile Communicating

Rural areas can be left behind as urban areas become connected, causing a digital divide. To address this problem, Ericsson is working with the government of Chile, and operator Entel to build a broadband network which will deliver voice and Internet services to 1,474 rural communities throughout Chile, enabling new services for some three million people.

Ericsson Response

Ericsson Response is a non-profit employee volunteer initiative that works in partnership with aid agencies to facilitate ICT solutions for their key missions; humanitarian relief work in disasters and enablers of economic growth and quality of life. In 2011, the volunteers supported the “UN One” project in Tanzania.
