5G Core programmability: an underestimated opportunity
Many communications service providers (CSP) worldwide have already laid their foundations to provide basic 5G services to consumers, mostly focusing on the eMBB and FWA market. Now these CSPs are taking the next step and investigating alternatives to best monetize their core network capabilities and offer innovative use cases towards industries and enterprises.
Network programmability is the answer to this need. Thanks to the 5G Core (5GC) network architecture, its common and standardized interfaces between all network functions and the new Network Exposure Function (NEF), service providers can create and expose a rich set of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) allowing them to become real service enablers and to build an eco-system for innovation never seen before in the telecom industry. Programmability in 5G Core networks has the potential to disrupt today’s mobile network business models.
