Mobile data traffic Q1 2017

The Q1 2017 edition of the Ericsson Mobility Report forecasts that, in 2022, monthly mobile data traffic per active smartphone in North America will increase substantially.

Key highlights

  • Data traffic grew 70% between Q1 2016 and Q1 2017

As in November’s Ericsson Mobility Report, mobile data traffic continues to grow, and the graph below shows total global monthly data and voice traffic from Q1 2012 to Q1 2017.1 It depicts a continued strong growth in data traffic, while voice traffic grows in the mid-single digits per year. This growth is driven by increased smartphone subscriptions and average data volume per subscription, fueled primarily by more viewing of video content. Recent introductory free data traffic offers in India have pushed up the global traffic noticeably – whether the volumes remain when pricing is applied remains to be seen.

Data traffic grew around 12 percent quarter-on-quarter and around 70 percent year-on-year. However, there are large differences in traffic levels between markets, regions and operators.
