Moving BSS to the Cloud: Early success stories

Available in English Français
From legacy to the cloud: there’s a fundamental shift in how business support systems (BSS) are being delivered, with forerunners in the telecommunications field moving from on premise IT infrastructure to hybrid or public cloud. Below we share how some communication service providers (CSPs) have elevated their business by successfully migrating their BSS stacks to the cloud.

In 2021, Ericsson evolved its entire BSS applications architecture to leverage the full benefits of cloud infrastructure. Since then, it has become even clearer that the best route to success in digital transformation is through the cloud, often augmented with managed IT services. After all, the cloud meets the increasing demand for flexible, scalable, and cost-effective IT solutions.

Coupled with advances in cloud technology and network infrastructure, this is driving the growth of cloud adoption across a wide range of industries and use cases. Additionally, the trend towards digital transformation, IoT, and the rise of data-intensive applications are expected to further fuel cloud service demand in the future.

This is reinforced by some of our early projects with CSPs, that leverage our BSS technologies and the cloud. In particular, Ericsson’s collaboration with AWS has delivered numerous benefits to CSPs, which we detail below. These two transformation journeys show encouraging proof that cloud computing is the future of networks.

Hardware replacement and scalability

A cloud transformation can involve the wholesale upgrade of services. To reach its business goal of unlocking the value of 5G for its customers, T-Mobile in the United States prepaid BSS stack needed to be overhauled. This meant replacing hardware to improve overall Capex and Opex and introduce scalability to ensure it was future-ready to enable the creation of new revenue streams. In a deep collaboration, Ericsson, AWS and T-Mobile created a joint solution to effect the migration and transformation of T-Mobile’s Magenta Prepaid Subscriber billing stack including more than 150 capabilities, to AWS. As a result, T-Mobile has already seen significantly reduced spending on hardware, energy costs have been reduced and platform stability has improved.

Future-proofing business

We have seen how transforming operations to be based in the cloud can help upgrade and bolster an operator’s systems, reducing complexity and ensuring efficiency. It’s important to keep in mind that all of this is done with a view to developing businesses to be ready for the future. North American Toll-Free operator SOMOS manages national and international registries like the North American Numbering Plan (NANP), Toll-Free Numbers (TFNA/TFNR), and the Reassigned Numbers Database (RND). The operator serves as the North American Numbering Plan Administrator and the Pooling Administrator for over 800 million local and wireless telephone numbers and operates the SMS/800 TFN Registry for over 42 million Toll-Free Numbers in North America. It realized the need for modernization in order to scale and ensure its critical services remained reliable for its growing customer base. It turned to Ericsson, with whom it has a 20 year relationship. Ericsson's solution was to provide cloud-native application development services and Artificial Intelligence (AI) based solutions from across its portfolio to open architecture on AWS.

Looking ahead

Building profitable, sustainable business based on 5G will necessarily mean an increase in network complexity. Managing this complexity with efficiency and economy, and enabling new business use cases to flourish is the task at hand for the Business Support Systems (BSS) technology stack. Our customer case studies show that this holds the key for smooth and scalable transformation, creating the telecoms IT infrastructure that gives customers the ability to realize innovative new business ideas based on 5G.
