Far EasTone and Ericsson sign an MoU for 5G and beyond

Far EasTone and Ericsson sign an MoU for 5G and beyond

Building on more than 20 years of partnership, Far EasTone Telecommunications (FET) and Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) have signed another Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen their collaboration in network evolution beyond 5G (B5G) and artificial intelligence (AI) to build a sustainable network.   

The partnership will explore network evolution into 5G Advanced, leveraging AI to build an intelligent and energy-efficient network. It will also take advantage of open Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to build momentum in FET’s quest to grow a new mobile economy business. By addressing these three focus areas, the collaboration aims to build a high-performing network while optimizing the user experience and accelerating industrial and societal digitalization with innovative use cases. 

As part of the agreement, both parties will continuously expand the collaboration in use cases, utilizing end-to-end 5G standalone network slicing capabilities, with key focus areas in smart policing and smart healthcare. In addition, FET and Ericsson will work hand in hand in network evolution towards 5G Advanced to accelerate development of immersive services. Furthermore, AI-apps will be used to optimize network and energy performance by being used for traffic prediction, energy consumption monitoring and power saving while improving user experiences.      

Another key area of focus for FET and Ericsson will be to deep-dive into open network APIs,  such as location and quality of service APIs, with the aim to further monetize 5G. Accessing network capabilities in an open, intuitive, and programmable approach via open APIs will enable millions of developers to create applications for any device connecting to the 5G network, and therefore foster innovative services to drive FET’s new mobile economy business.

Chris Houghton, Senior Vice President and Head of Northeast Asia, Ericsson, paid a visit to Taiwan to witness the signing of the MoU. He says: "We are delighted to ink this MoU with FET to deepen our strategic partnership. Mobile networks are the critical infrastructure to enable digital transformation for society. We look forward to continuing to work with FET in 5G and beyond to foster innovation and to accelerate Taiwan’s digitalization across public and private sectors.”

David Chou, President of Ericsson Taiwan, says: “Together with FET, we have achieved many milestones in 5G for the past two years, such as demonstrating world’s first 5G end-to-end multiple network slicing on multiple devices, and developing early network slicing use case with the police department. With this new MoU, we will expand our collaboration in 5G Advanced to unleash 5G’s full potential with SA network slicing. In addition, as we share common goals in reaching Net Zero, our target is to support FET in building a high-performing and sustainable network with our best-in-class portfolio for energy efficiency.”
