A new edge for service providers and developers

Explore how to scale the edge business

Edge exposure

Edge computing is a crucial part of 5G to realize many new consumer and enterprise services. In combination with edge infrastructure, - user plane, - routing and orchestration, edge exposure helps CSPs to add value beyond connectivity in the 5G ecosystem.

Why edge exposure

Watch this video to understand the value of our solution.

Exposure through APIs on the edge is getting increasingly important for CSPs to enable new services, increase their relevance in the 5G ecosystem and become more attractive partners for hyperscale cloud providers, application ecosystems and other players.

Applications on the edge require network capabilities and data, such as device location, information and quality of service with enriched information to improve existing services in terms of performance, security and develop new ones. The 5G ecosystem is complex and requires implementation new business models, simplification for application developers’ when they interact with the telecom network.

Benefits with edge exposure

Brings enriched APIs for edge applications across 4G/5G providing simplicity for developers and short TTM for new services.
Enables CSPs to add value within the ecosystem through functions such as edge application discovery for optimal device and edge application connect.
Supports monetization of new business models involving several parties through common exposure function for unified security and charging support.

Edge exposure and 5G

In this video interview, Jo Peterson at Clarify360 and Ericsson’s Monica Zethzon, Head of Solution Area Packet Core, are discussing some of the key topics for 5G:

  • What is needed to realize new applications?
  • What new use cases are being discussed?
  • What skills are needed to make it happen?
  • Who’s part of this equation?

Edge exposure use case example for connected drones

connected drones

Regulators often mandate trusted identification and drone location via the CSP network. Remote drone handling also requires low latency for critical commands from the drone management system (for example emergency services) running on the edge and to stream video live.

Edge exposure helps in discovering the drone application which the drones communicate with. It provides trusted network remote ID for security purposes. Via enriched API, differentiated QoS for multiple drones can be done through a single API call based on location and reduce the number of API calls while the location is retrieved locally.

The result is improved latency between the drones and the application from 1 to 10 seconds to 100ms, which allows for the emergency response team to get a faster view on the situation and respond more effectively.

Ericsson Edge Exposure Server

Ericsson Edge Exposure Server is part of the existing offering Ericsson Cloud Core Exposure Server, which is a cloud native core network exposure function in Ericsson’s dual-mode 5G Core offering. It is based on a full set of standard APIs for 4G and 5G (catered to by 3GPP SCEF and NEF standards) empowered by extra capabilities for API gateway, management, and security.

Ericsson Edge Exposure Server provides simplified and feature enrichments APIs for edge applications, such as user equipment information API, network QoS API and location API. And to reduce complexity for developers and needed system integration when deploying new services, harmonized service APIs addition to standard APIs are provided.

Caroline Chappell
"Operators need to unlock the capabilities of the 5G network in order to drive the next wave of enterprise applications and revenues. Ericsson’s Exposure Server supports developer-friendly APIs and a path to API harmonization across CSP 4/5G networks. This will enable CSPs to add value within the edge ecosystem to application developers, system integrators, public cloud providers and device OEMs.” - Caroline Chappell, Research director at Analysys Mason
