What it means to be a digital service provider
Today, it is no longer a question of whether a service provider should go digital or not; the question is how to start. While 5G and digitalization are independent transformations, they are fully dependent on each other's successful implementation to ensure a complimentary environment of network capabilities and business support. The result will be one platform that delivers on what it is set up to do—enabling a profitable and thriving open ecosystem for the service providers, their customers, and their partners—supporting new revenue opportunities and new business models. 5G meets digital, and digital meets 5G.
While the requirements for becoming a digital service provider have gone through endless iterations within the industry, we see the journey to digitalization as meeting three very specific criteria:
- Digital engagements: digitalization of the customer experience.
- Automated operations: zero-touch introduction of new services and network capabilities.
- Programmable networks: configurability as well as openness of the core network, including virtualization and containerization of network applications and platforms.
Embarking on these journeys will involve different paths—and each service provider needs to choose the blueprint that is most relevant to its customers, partners, and ecosystems based on its strategy and current situation.
