A strategic win born from collaboration

At Ericsson, we believe the most profound innovations are born not in isolation, but at the intersection of disciplines.

The story behind the Antenna 4818’s historic Red Dot Award is a testament to this belief. It wasn't a stroke of luck; it was the direct outcome of a deliberate strategy, proactive collaboration, and a shared vision for what a piece of network hardware could—and should—be.

The journey began when our new antenna housing design was first introduced – honeycomb design – back in 2024. We knew its form was a significant departure from the industry standard, but its real strength lay in the clear functional and sustainability advantages it offered.

This potential was crystallized during a visit to our antenna site in Rosenheim, Germany, where the antenna’s design quality and user-centric characteristics became clearly apparent. Building on this, the opportunity to pursue the Red Dot Design Award emerged through close collaboration between R&D and the Design and User Experience (DUX) team, recognizing a strong alignment with the award’s globally recognized criteria for innovation, functionality, and usability.

What followed was an example of effective cross-functional teamwork. R&D played a central role in driving the initiative, leveraging deep product knowledge to shape the overall narrative and—together with Marketing—developing a product description that highlighted the design intent beyond purely technical specifications.

The DUX team supported the process by providing design-related expertise and coordinating Ericsson’s Red Dot submissions, including managing the formal application and submission activities. In close partnership with Sales, the teams ensured a coherent and compelling presentation. This joint effort culminated in the preparation of a physical unit for the jury—a crucial step that allowed them to experience the product’s design quality firsthand.

The "Trio net" philosophy: Design that delivers on three fronts

What makes the Antenna 4818’s design so revolutionary? It is the physical embodiment of our “Trio net” design philosophy.

This is a holistic approach that refuses to treat performance, Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), and sustainability as competing priorities. Instead, it integrates them into a single, cohesive system where every choice serves a purpose and every innovation creates value across all three dimensions.

This philosophy challenges the conventional wisdom that you must sacrifice one goal to achieve another. Can a high-performance antenna also be lightweight and sustainable? Can a product that reduces operational costs also deliver market-leading efficiency?

With the Trio net approach, the answer is a resounding yes. The Antenna 4818, part of our Everest platform, proves that thoughtful design is the key to unlocking benefits once considered mutually exclusive.

      Deconstructing an award-winning design

The Antenna 4818 is an integrated system where every curve, material, and structural element is engineered to solve our customers' most pressing challenges. Let's break down how its key innovations translate directly into measurable benefits for network operators.

      • Boosts network performance and efficiency The antenna achieves a market-leading beam efficiency of up to 86%, delivering superior coverage, capacity, and uplink performance.
      • Reduces environmental impact by 42% Its innovative honeycomb structure and 100% recyclable radome contribute to a 42% reduction in embodied CO2 compared to previous generations.
      • Lowers Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) A unique aerodynamic shape and vortex generators create a 20% improvement in wind load, reducing tower stress and long-term maintenance costs.
      • Simplifies and secures installation The design is over 37% lighter than previous models and features smart brackets, making the entire installation process safer, simpler, and faster.

This is our Trio net philosophy in practice: a single, elegant design that simultaneously boosts performance, slashes carbon footprint, and drives down operational costs.

A milestone that redefines the future

Winning the Red Dot Award for a passive antenna is more than an accolade for a single product. It is a powerful validation of our strategic direction and a defining moment for our industry.

It proves that innovation in telecommunications hardware must extend beyond pure technical performance. World-class industrial design, usability, and sustainability are no longer secondary considerations; they are essential pillars for building the high-performing, cost-effective, and sustainable networks of the future.

This achievement reinforces Ericsson’s position as a pioneer. It showcases the immense value that emerges when we empower our teams to collaborate across functions and challenge the status quo.

For our customers, it is a clear signal of our commitment to solving their most complex problems through holistic, thoughtful innovation that delivers value on every front. This is just the beginning.
