Roberto’s expertise covers several areas of telecom networks, such as packet-optical transport, optical solutions for mobile backhaul and fronthaul, photonics technologies for radio networks and data centers, and cloud robotics for future factories.

He is currently heading the optical systems unit in Ericsson Research, based in Pisa, Italy, and Montreal, Canada.

Roberto is a senior member of the IEEE, and has guest edited many special issues in several journals and magazines. He has authored more than 150 papers for international journals, magazines and conferences, two books on optical communications, and holds more than 30 patents. He lectures at several European universities.

Roberto is vice president of the Tuscany Technology District on Industry 4.0. He launched the program “5G for Tuscany” in 2015, which Ericsson evolved at the national level in the program “5G for Italy” in tight cooperation with TIM in 2016.

Roberto holds a D.Eng. in electronic engineering from the Sapienza University of Rome, Italy, where he has also been an adjunct professor of Telecom systems design.
