Security R&D at Ericsson France

Ericsson has more than 60,000 patents to its name, such as Bluetooth, and we continue to develop the latest telecommunications technology to improve communications around the world. As part of this work, the R&D security team in France are dedicated to making sure the new technology safe and secure, this includes analysing and testing the security of our technology.

Across the team our colleagues like Anil, a penetration test engineer, and Meriem, a security specialist in product security and member of the security quality team, work to evaluate the vulnerability of new products before release. Meriem explains what she primarily does in her role: “I evaluate the security of products before they are released to customers and contribute to technical security risks analysis to prevent vulnerabilities.”

Daily life as part of the France R&D security team

Our daily tasks allow us to collaborate with the latest technology: “I investigate topics such as penetration testing and vulnerability assessments for our services and products. My main task concerning the security by understanding how it was built to be able to find flaws and exploit them.”

5G is becoming the first choice for communication systems for first responders. Mission critical services are a key for Police, Fire, Ambulance and Emergency Services. A new project of this type is currently being deployed by five countries around the world: in France with RRF, the U.S with FirstNet, the U.K with ESN, Virve 2.0 in Finland and SafeNet in South Korea. Ericsson is one of the main providers for such systems, in that sense my contribution is going beyond than just Ericsson.

In addition to our work at Ericsson, we participate in events outside the company. Anil recently led an Ericsson team as a captain in a cyber defense competition where his team took first place. Here is how he describes his experience: “It was an honor to collaborate with such professionals in the same team, I'm truly grateful to everyone in my team. It was complex work, I learned to earn trust among my colleagues and deliver results. I know security is being taken very seriously and it is one of the top priorities for our customers. I hope this achievement will contribute to strengthen our customer trust even more.”

Our Culture

Respect plays a big part in our culture; this is important as we work as a team. Respect for each other means that if we have any questions, we can talk to each other regardless of our role or seniority – we have an open-minded culture which is shared among our colleagues. Sebastien, a Product Developer Lead in France says: “At Ericsson, the culture of being respectful to all people on the team and taking into consideration different perspectives makes it a good environment to solve problems. Everybody can speak up. If people have a problem, we help find the best solution for everyone.”

When there are challenging problems, there is always someone is who willing to help. Meriem explains what this speak up open attitude at Ericsson means to her and her work: “I can ping my manager anytime if I have any problems, and we can fix it together. There is also autonomy to discuss problems, present ideas and a culture of being able to talk anyone.” Anil agrees and adds: “I enjoy working at Ericsson because of the unique Swedish culture which is good and warm; I don’t feel much stress or pressure. There is an open-minded culture here.”

Learning and Development

Not only do we learn from our colleagues to improve the technology, but we also work to develop ourselves through learning new skills and to develop our careers. We have a vast range of opportunities and tools to develop professionally and personally in the direction we want. This is available to all colleagues no matter their role or experience.

Sebastien shares: “We have lots of training tools available and everybody is happy to share technical knowledge so it’s easy to find good information and answers.” If there is a particular skill or training we need in our role, then Ericsson will do their best to support and help you receive that support. Meriem also says that “we can propose what training we want and need, and Ericsson will review and approve to support us to get that training.”
