Odido: Ericsson and AWS accelerate digital transformation and innovation in billing at Odido

Odido Netherlands partnered with Ericsson to consolidate billing for multiple lines of business, boosting performance with a single cloud-native Ericsson Billing on AWS.

Introduction

Odido streamlines operations with cloud-native billing transformation on AWS

Over the last two years, Odido made bold moves to modernize its billing systems moving to the Cloud. This to prepare for the full potential of 5G, including advanced offerings like FWA (Fixed Wireless Access). Working closely with us at Ericsson, along with AWS and Wipro, Odido built a faster, more flexible billing platform that enables it to launch innovative products quickly and efficiently. Key to this success has been close collaboration with partners, synchronizing technology, expertise, and vision. Do you want to know more about how this transformation was achieved?

“We’ve just done a billing migration with 0 faults in it. A billing migration is an open-heart surgery, on a marathon runner, while they run. And we managed to do that.”

What?

Odido has taken a step forward to future-proof its operations by modernizing billing infrastructure with Ericsson Billing, a modern, cloud-native platform hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS). Now, billing for both the Odido main brand as well as for MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) Ben runs on one unified platform that supports both consumer and enterprise services.

Why?

Odido needed billing flexibility to launch advanced 5G services, overcome legacy bottlenecks, and accelerate time-to-market. Moving to a public cloud platform provided scalability, resilience, and improved customer experiences during high-demand events.

How?

Can you modernize a telecom billing system without risking massive disruptions? Taking a smart, phased approach, we started by migrating MVNO Ben customers first, treating it as a low-risk trial to refine the process. Then, after rigorous testing with live data, the large-scale migration of five million Odido customers was achieved in a single weekend.

Challenges

Inflexible legacy systems

Migration risks

Slower time-to-market

Scalability constraints

Odido faced several challenges that hindered its ability to fully embrace the opportunities of the 5G era. Its legacy billing systems were heavily customized and inflexible, making it difficult to quickly adapt to evolving market demands or introduce advanced services such as network slicing. This rigidity also led to slow time-to-market for new products, as outdated processes and complex system architectures created delays and inefficiencies.

Additionally, the planned migration of millions of customer accounts posed a significant risk, with the potential for service disruptions and billing errors that could damage customer trust. These challenges underscored the need for Odido to modernize its billing infrastructure with a more agile, scalable, and future-ready solution.

The route forward was clear. Odido needed a modern cloud-native billing solution. A single platform for both mobile and fixed services. One that meets both functional needs and non-functional demands like resilience and strong security. This would cut total costs, simplify operations, and replace multiple complex systems with one agile, future-ready solution.

Drivers for change

  • One converged billing solution for mobile and fixed services.
  • Deploy billing in the public cloud with resilience and security.
  • Reduce TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) and simplify management of billing systems.

Solution

Odido’s journey to a modernized billing platform was powered by smart technology choices and game-changing partnerships. By embracing our cloud-native Ericsson Billing system hosted on AWS, Odido unlocked the scalability, rock-solid security, and resilience needed to thrive in the fast-paced world of modern telecom and bring cutting-edge 5G services to life.

From day one, we worked side-by-side, making sure every stage of the transformation was executed to perfection. The phased migration strategy started with nearly one million customers from Odido’s MVNO brand, Ben. This was a calculated, lower-risk pilot before scaling to the full customer base. We planned extensively and tested rigorously, running repeated live-data mock migrations to guarantee the switchover would be flawless, with zero downtime and no service interruptions.

Once the system went live, Odido could fully harness AWS’s automatic scaling to meet surging demand  ensuring customers enjoyed seamless experiences even at peak moments. This transformation wasn't just a system upgrade; it was a bold leap into the future of agile, customer-first telecom operations.

Ericsson Billing is a convergent billing solution for telecoms that combines an unrivalled combination of out-of-the box features and high configurability. It provides a low-risk but effective route to capture and secure revenue streams and take advantage of business opportunities from both traditional telecom services as well as digital services, 5G and IoT. Its open state-of-the-art architecture is highly business adaptive, enabling stepwise modular upgrades in line with changes to the business environment.

This means Ericsson Billing can meet the end-to-end requirements of entry level CSPs with high growth potential or can easily be integrated into the complex IT environment of mature businesses with highly demanding large-scale subscriber bases.

Results

Odido’s billing transformation delivers powerful, measurable results. Reshaping operations and unlocking new possibilities. Odido is achieving bill processing speeds that are in a whole new league: standard bill runs now complete 30% faster, and complex B2B bills are produced up to five times quicker. This leap in efficiency frees up valuable resources so the team can focus on what matters most: innovation and delivering exceptional customer experiences. Since the migration, platform stability underscored the resilience and reliability of going cloud-native. The enhanced flexibility and scalability have directly supported successful product launches, such as the 5G. Additionally, during high-demand events, AWS automatic scaling ensured seamless service without customer delays, further enhancing customer satisfaction.

Together, we streamlined operations by consolidating multiple billing systems into one unified Ericsson Billing platform to keep on innovating with 5G services. By deploying Ericsson Billing across AWS Availability Zones, we’re setting the stage for a truly agile, future-ready telecom infrastructure.

Odido’s vision for the future includes leveraging AI to proactively address billing issues, enhance customer experience, and support upcoming 5G innovations.
