Consumer electronics

Ericsson has made substantial R&D investments in technologies essential to consumer electronic and multimedia devices, some of which are described in more detail below. We provide access to these technologies via our consumer electronics licensing program.

Media technologies

Given the importance of audio and video to next-generation mobile broadband use case examples and the burden such traffic puts on networks, media codecs are critically important in enabling some of the most exciting technologies, such as high-quality streaming and video conferencing, VR/AR applications, remote control and fully immersive 360° video and games. Ericsson has made substantial R&D investments in media codec technologies. Any device or service compatible with the corresponding media codec standards is using Ericsson’s patents.

High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC)
HEVC is a video compression standard developed in MPEG, enabling bandwidth savings and reduced storage costs. HEVC is a key technology for delivering Ultra High Definition (UHD) content, which creates high-quality viewing experiences on multiple types of devices including mobile phones, tablets, laptops, TVs, set-top boxes, cameras, gaming consoles, streaming devices and drones.

Versatile Video Coding (VVC)

VVC is the next generation video compression standard, developed in MPEG, building further on HEVC. This new codec will cut the bitrate roughly in half, greatly reducing the load of video traffic on networks without sacrificing quality, delivering a more seamless experience for users across devices and services. Furthermore, VVC enables even higher resolutions and new immersive applications such as VR and AR.

Enhanced Voice Services (EVS)
EVS is a codec for speech and audio developed in 3GPP with features including high robustness for delay jitter and packet losses. The main EVS applications are high-quality audio telephony, teleconferencing and audio streaming. Today, EVS is used in almost all new mobile phones and other devices with voice services enabled.

Low Complexity Communication Codec Plus (LC3plus)

LC3plus is a new high-quality speech and audio codec standardized in ETSI. Main application areas include robust short-range transmissions, extremely low-delay use case examples and high-resolution audio streaming. LC3plus is used in devices that require clear, high-quality audio, such as wireless speakers and headphones.

WiFi technologies

Ericsson is taking an active role in IEEE standardization. Our contributions are mainly related to connectivity technologies for wireless local area network standards such as WiFi 5 and WiFi 6. Going forward, we continue to be active in next generation standard development, enhancing wireless connectivity in homes, public and enterprise environments.

Other consumer electronics technologies

Ericsson also has a strong patent portfolio in other consumer electronics technologies such as advanced antennas, RF/BB technology, power management, security, user interface and applications.

Devices that may use our patented technologies are for example gaming consoles, laptops, tablets, streaming devices, cameras and smart watches.
