Media Gateway for Mobile Networks
The Ericsson Media Gateway for Mobile Networks (M-MGw) provides a cost-efficient media plane solution for mobile switching applications through secure IP transport and HD voice functionalities over all interfaces, supporting easy migration to VoLTE and IMS through only a software upgrade and the addition of individual boards.
The Ericsson Media Gateway for Mobile Networks (M-MGw) is a high-performance media plane product — deployed globally in almost 400 networks — that serves as a solution to the challenges service providers face today as well as those expected in the future, such as how to reduce voice production costs and safeguard revenue in evolving telephony environments.
Cost-efficiency is achieved by implementing pooling in networks in order to share and utilize their resources in the most optimal way. Accomplishing precisely this, M-MGw supports IP transport on all interfaces to deliver the best possible end-to-end HD voice quality and bandwidth utilization. M-MGw IP support also covers A interfaces within GSM radios and VoIP interfaces connected to IMS frameworks as well as other external mobile and fixed networks.
Our unique approach to converging all media plane functionalities needed for mobile switching and IMS in a single product enables Ericsson Media Gateway to be a future-proof solution introducing VoLTE and IMS services. M-MGw can also host not only MGw applications but also Border Gateway Function (BGF) applications, offering secure IP transport to external (access or foreign) networks and media resource function controller (MRFC) and media resource function processor (MRFP) applications to facilitate announcements and conferencing in a multimedia environment. BGF and MRF applications provide full support for the state-of-the-art EVS codec in VoLTE and VoWifi networks. Support of HD video transcoding in M-MGw enables services such as HD-quality video conferencing with active speaker detection, and the colocation of HD-quality speech and video services enables service providers to utilize the installed Ericsson Media Gateway bases for multimedia services to reduce the number of media plane nodes in the networks, ensuring the best resource utilization and energy efficiency.
