Cognitive Software rApps

The concept of Radio Access Network (RAN) automation applications (rApps) is defined by Open RAN. rApps are software applications designed to run on the Non-Real Time RAN Intelligent Controller (Non-RT RIC) to realize different RAN management and optimization use cases in an automated way, with control loops on a time scale of one second and longer. The Ericsson Intelligent Controller (EIC) is Ericsson’s realization of the Non-RT RIC as part of the Ericsson Intelligent Automation Platform.
Open RAN and Service Management and Orchestration (SMO) brings a new approach to build disaggregated networks using standardized open interfaces. SMO and rApps allow transformation of customer operations and realization of programmable, intent driven networks which are critical to provide differentiated connectivity and services, which in turn helps to monetize 5G investments —an area that has been quite challenging until now.
