Welcome to the R&D Center in Yokohama

      Available in:

Our R&D hub in Yokohama, built for what’s next. It connects Japan’s innovation with Ericsson’s global R&D, bringing deep radio expertise, next‑gen network development, and strong local collaboration under one roof.

A talent and tech hub shaping what’s next for networks

Located in Yokohama’s Minato Mirai 21 district, the center began operations in April 2026, with the official inauguration planned for the first half of 2027.

The R&D center will create up to 300 high-skilled engineering roles in Japan. Teams will contribute directly to technologies, standards, and products used by networks worldwide.

By expanding our engineering presence in Japan, we strengthen local telecom expertise and connect Japan’s innovation ecosystem with Ericsson’s global R&D community. Together, we shape what comes next in our portfolio.

The center focuses on advanced radio hardware and software engineering, helping us develop next-generation network technologies that meet the needs of customers in Japan while also contributing to Ericsson’s global product portfolio. The Yokohama R&D Center will provide the following:

Advanced Radio Hardware and Software Engineering

      • Developing advanced radio hardware and software for both Japanese and global markets
      • Driving innovation in high-performing programmable 5G and next-generation mobile technologies, such as AI RAN
      • Giving engineers access to an advanced, high-touch lab environment where ideas can be tested, refined, and brought closer to real customer needs

Upstream technical interface for the Japan ecosystem

The Yokohama R&D Center will serve as a direct bridge between Japan’s connectivity ecosystem and Ericsson’s global product development. By working closely with Japanese operators, enterprises, and public-sector partners, we can bring Japan’s specific requirements into our global RAN, 5G, and AI-RAN development.

      Customer and Partner collaboration

      • Supporting closer collaboration with customers and partners through dedicated on-site office and collaboration areas
      • Providing product, technology, and solution support to local operators and partners
Focused work in a meeting room

Part of a 150-year legacy of innovation, including 40+ years in Japan

Ericsson has been operating in Japan since 1985, supporting the country's leading mobile operators across every generation of connectivity — from 2G through to 5G. The Yokohama R&D Center builds on this long-term commitment, deepening Ericsson's roots in Japan's innovation ecosystem and strengthening collaboration with Japanese operators, academia, and government.

“Telecom is critical infrastructure that must be both high-performing and secure at all times. Our expansion in Yokohama is not only about building more R&D capacity, it is about working even more closely with Japanese customers and partners. By co-innovating in Japan for the world, we will strengthen the broader Japanese ICT ecosystem and support the country’s digital transformation and economic security. “
