The NESAS and SCAS security assurance schemes are a step toward achieving this later ambition. And, yes, they make us fully compliant with 3GPP/GSMA NESAS global security assurance framework for Network products!
5G is one of the fastest evolving mobile generations, and not without reason. Just look at Ericsson’s 5G product portfolio, which is constantly being updated to meet the industry’s needs and growing customer demands. This unprecedented 5G growth and evolution, however, comes with its own security implications.
With NESAS and SCAS, we have taken the much-needed measure to identify and address the security issues much before they become a threat to communication service providers (CSP) and, eventually, the subscribers.
NESAS, SCAS - what are we talking about? Here comes the explanation.
What is Network Equipment Security Assurance Scheme (NESAS)?
The GSMA Network Equipment Security Assurance Scheme (NESAS) upgrades and improves network equipment security levels across the mobile industry.
NESAS defines an assessment framework for the secure development and lifecycle management of products, as well as security test cases for the evaluation of network equipment. It provides one universal and global security assurance framework, thus increasing confidence and trust in mobile network equipment.
Why does Security Assurance Specification product evaluation and testing (SCAS) matter?
SCAS security assurance is about testing the network products, for example, the base stations. The test allows for an objective evaluation of the products' security levels. And what does successful testing mean? It means that our customers and subscribers can be confident that our network platforms conform to security standards, as we have confirmed by successfully completing the evaluation for key 5G products in October 2022.
How do the CSPs benefit from NESAS and SCAS?
Completing the NESAS and SCAS evaluations ensures Ericsson reaffirms our commitment to drive open, global, and interoperable security standards. This is a guarantee that our products and solutions offer the security and confidence our customers need when upgrading their networks or deploying new ones.
With 5G networks creating a huge socioeconomic impact, network security is today one of the most critical factors for CSPs, enterprises, and national governments. In such a scenario, NESAS and SCAS compliance ensures the trustworthiness of Ericsson’s mobile technologies and security assurance frameworks and will continue to serve as a guarantee of our reliability and quality.
