Our presence in Nigeria was notably strengthened through the recent historic visit of Nigeria's Vice President, His Excellency Senator Kashim Shettima, to Sweden in October 2024. This significant diplomatic exchange deepened bilateral ties, with Ericsson announcing an investment dedicated to building a state-of-the-art technology hub in Nigeria[2]. The visit culminated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between Nigeria and Ericsson to establish a pioneering 5G Innovation Lab. This strategic initiative is poised to elevate Nigeria's status as a technological hub within Africa, catalyzing innovation, fostering local entrepreneurship, and positioning the nation as a leader in global digital competitiveness.
In alignment with our commitment to Nigeria's Vision 2030, we recognize that education and skills development are critical to leveraging this digital transformation. To this end, our Connect to Learn initiative is improving access to quality education and has already reached over 485,000 students across Africa and beyond. By fostering collaborations with local schools, we are promoting STEM education – particularly among girls – ensuring that the next generation is equipped with the necessary skills for a competitive global workforce. Moreover, our ongoing partnership on 5G technology will facilitate access to advanced learning tools, effectively bridging the digital divide between urban and rural areas. This foundational work supports not only individual growth but also positions Nigeria as a leader in innovation on the continent.
Across Sub-Saharan Africa, 5G technology is experiencing remarkable adoption, projected to grow annually at an impressive rate of 59%[3]. This significant growth highlights the essential role of robust and resilient digital infrastructure in driving economic sustainability and technological advancement. In line with this, Ericsson remains at the forefront of driving network modernization in Nigeria, working closely with our strategic partners such as MTN Nigeria. Our collaboration involves modernizing core network infrastructure, which will significantly enhance broadband penetration in alignment with Nigeria's ambitious national broadband plan.
The digital revolution brought by enhanced connectivity is already proving transformative for numerous sectors in Nigeria, from agriculture and healthcare to education and financial services. For example, mobile money platforms have substantially increased financial inclusion, providing millions of Nigerians with secure, efficient, and transparent financial transactions. The event served as a powerful reminder of the impact that strategic partnerships can have in advancing sustainable digital transformation.
It also reinforced the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and Sweden and Ericsson's role in that partnership.
