Next-generation public safety networks
Reliable and real-time access to critical information are crucial for public safety operations. Together with Erillisverkot Group, the state-run body responsible for national mobile communications networks for public safety authorities, emergency services and other critical services in Finland, Ericsson builds the next-generation Public Protection and Disaster Relief (PPDR) network based on 4G/5G technology.
Highlights
In any emergency situation, instant, reliable and stable communication is key to enable and support successful emergency operations. First time responders like fire-fighters, emergency medical service personnel or policemen need to be able to rely on fast and secure connectivity to save lives. To meet those demands, public safety agencies are increasingly turning to mobile 3GPP based solutions due to the capabilities provided by 4G and 5G - such as the secure and speedy sharing of data, images and video.
Together with Erillisverkot Group in Finland, Ericsson realizes mission critical connectivity needs by providing the next-generation dual-mode core network products and solutions for Erillisverkot's mission critical broadband network.
Erillisverkot's Public Protection and Disaster Relief (PPDR) network initiative - called Virve 2.0 - is based on commercial mobile 3GPP technology with enhancements to meet security, availability and resilience. Virve 2.0 will be one of the most significant Finnish government ICT projects of the next few years. The network is planned to be operational mid-2021. All users will be migrated to Virve 2.0 by the end of 2025.
The customer needs
Erillisverkot expects all current Virve (public safety) services to be completely migrated to next-generation Virve 2.0 technology by end of 2025. The services will work in parallel until the migration is complete.
The solution
Provision of Ericsson 3GPP Core IT systems, products and solutions in nationwide public safety network.
Ericsson’s dual-mode 5G Core portfolio on a common cloud-native platform.
Ericsson NFVI, Dynamic Orchestration, VoLTE solutions, Positioning solutions and Ericsson Security Manager are also included, alongside network deployment, learning and support services.
The expected result
Delivery of efficient total cost of ownership.
Enablement of the smooth introduction of 4G/5G services.
Enabling Erillisverkot to manage and control its mission critical broadband network, safeguard information security and protect data integrity.
