Rogers: 5G network slicing to deliver superior service experiences

Introducing network slicing for new 5G use cases for enterprise and consumer segments using Ericsson Dynamic Network Slicing, powered by Ericsson Service Orchestration and Assurance.

Rogers’ Orchestration Director, Raymond Mui talks about service orchestration and assurance evolution for network slicing

What?

Setting out to evolve service orchestration and assurance capabilities with clear objectives, Rogers is planning to:

  • Build the best 5G network with a powerful combination of coverage, quality and reliability to deliver new services
  • Offer network slicing and all the new services it enables

Why?

The new solution enables use cases across industry verticals to deliver next-generation services, and helps Rogers to:

  • Operationalize network slicing for fast commercialization and monetization of 5G slice-based services
  • Reduce time-to-market and service delivery time
  • Automate the complete service life-cycle to deliver services with greater efficiency

How?

In partnership with Ericsson, Rogers implemented Ericsson Service Orchestration and Assurance, to enable the Ericsson Dynamic Network Slicing solution. With this solution Rogers can commercialize, operationalize, and industrialize innovative new services at scale.

“We are proud to be the first operator in Canada to successfully complete a nationwide live test of 5G network slicing technology, as part of our commitment to bring Canadians the biggest and best networks. This industry-leading technology, combined with new orchestration capabilities, will help us drive innovation and enable new 5G use cases and applications – connecting more Canadians to Wireless Home Internet and supporting our public safety partners and businesses.”

The challenge

With Rogers’ legacy environment, several challenges were apparent:

Difficult and inefficient to innovate and launch new types of services quickly because of time consuming processes.

Complicated to adapt to rapidly changing service requirements, to introduce new services quickly.

Challenging to ensure consistent service quality and a positive customer experience, as services become more complex and diverse.

Increased costs and operational inefficiencies due to lack in automation in network life cycle management

To ensure superior service experiences, Rogers needed a new set of systems and processes.

Rogers‘ key business drivers

  • Enabling diverse and complex services.
  • Simplification, ease of use and agility.
  • Automated network lifecycle management.
  • Improve service experience and grow with scale.
  • Reduce time to market and time to revenue.
  • Operational efficiencies and cost reduction.

The solution

In partnership with Ericsson, Rogers implemented Ericsson Service Orchestration and Assurance, to enable the Ericsson Dynamic Network Slicing solution.

With this solution Rogers can commercialize, operationalize, and industrialize innovative new services at scale.

  • Separating fixed and mobile traffic to accelerate the expansion of 5G Wireless Home Internet to communities across Canada, and proactively optimize and dedicate traffic flows to ensure a more consistent and reliable service for both residential and mobile users
  • Offering a dedicated lane for Public Safety to have priority on the network

The new solution enables use cases across industry verticals using 5G network slicing to deliver next-generation services, helping Rogers businesses grow with use cases such as:

  • Industry-specific services, e.g., healthcare, broadcasting, online gaming
  • Private Networks for Enterprises
  • Fixed Wireless Access

The result

The deployment of Ericsson Service Orchestration and Assurance, that enables the Ericsson Dynamic Network Slicing solution, helps Rogers operationalize network slicing for easy and fast commercialization and monetization of 5G slice-based services.

Ericsson’s orchestration solution helps reduce the time-to-market and service delivery time. It enables automation of the complete service life-cycle and delivers services with greater efficiency.

The key benefit of the orchestration solution is to enable Rogers to make the transformation from a static network to one that is open and programmable, that can ensure a more consistent and reliable service for both residential and mobile users – bringing  Canadians the best network and fostering a made-in-Canada 5G ecosystem.

With this solution Rogers can truly operationalize network slicing:

  • Easy and fast commercialization of 5G slice-based services
  • Enable service innovation with improved customer service experience
  • Enhance agility and flexibility on new service composition and on-demand service activation
  • Streamline processes with better service life cycle management
  • Operational efficiency with automated network life cycle management
