A partnership aiming at top-quality connectivity across Greece
Case

From best-effort to best-in-class connectivity — premium FWA in remote areas of Greece with COSMOTE 5G WiFi

Highlights

  • Premium connectivity in remote areas – Bringing high-speed internet to areas where fiber is difficult to deploy due to Greece’s geography. The service delivers high internet speeds of up to 300 Mbps.
  • Powered by 5G Standalone – This network enables network slicing, creating slices adapted to subscribers’ needs, aiming to provide reliable services based on dynamic resource allocation.
  • Impact at scale – 19,500 students in 600 remote schools of Greece will have access to rich digital content, virtual tours and remote learning, while also giving teachers the opportunity to integrate digital tools into their lessons.
  • Connectivity that empowers – When the network performs everywhere, people can thrive everywhere.

The challenge

Greece is a country of extremes - something that applies to many global markets: mountains, islands, remote villages and dense cities, with much of the population living beyond easy reach of fiber. At the same time, education, work and entertainment are increasingly dependent on reliable connectivity.

With growing digital demands, the gap in connectivity risked widening social and economic disparities across the country, emphasizing the need for a scalable, innovative solution that could bridge these divides efficiently.

So, what if a service could deliver high performance and reliable connectivity to every home far from cities, from mountains to islands?

The solution

COSMOTE 5G WiFi

In early 2025, COSMOTE TELEKOM launched its differentiated 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) service - branded as 5G WiFi - leveraging network slicing to ensure consistent, high-quality performance. It’s a complementary to FTTH service that makes the most of the FWA technology based on COSMOTE TELEKOM's 5G and 5G Standalone (5G+) networks powered by Ericsson’s 5G Radio & Core capabilities.  Network slicing in 5G SA creates slices adapted to subscribers’ needs, aiming to provide reliable services based on dynamic resource allocation. Each slice operates as an independent network, designed for specific bandwidth and speed requirements. And that’s what differentiates COSMOTE 5G WiFi.

Designed to contribute to Greece’s digital transformation, this reliable and innovative service brings fast fixed internet even in areas without fixed-line networks or with limited coverage. It is an alternative solution to both conventional fixed (DSL) and satellite connections, which uses wireless connections to provide homes and businesses even in hard-to-reach areas, with high-speed internet.

The impact

FWA technology on COSMOTE TELEKOM’s 5G Stand-Alone network delivers fiber-like broadband where laying fiber isn’t feasible.

Besides households and businesses, the service will lead schools in remote areas of Greece to a new era of connectivity, as nearly 600 school units with more than 19,500 students, will eventually benefit from high-speed internet services.

Overall, this service accelerates digital transformation in Greece, while offering a scalable blueprint for premium nationwide broadband.

It’s a path that can be adapted to different markets but with careful planning, the right partnerships, and tailored execution.

Maria Daskalou

Maria Daskalou, Technical Tribe Officer at COSMOTE TELEKOM: “Connectivity in Greece has always been influenced by geography. We are in a country with mountains, islands and remote communities - beautiful but challenging for infrastructure. That was the big challenge we had to overcome. To find an effective, complementary solution to FTTH that could move quickly and still feel premium. And that’s what COSMOTE 5G WiFi did.”

Konstantinos Chatzimichail

Konstantinos Chatzimichail, Head of Networks at Ericsson Hellas: “COSMOTE TELEKOM is setting the scene in Greece on how advanced 5G connectivity can turn challenging geographies into showcases for innovation. Together, we leveraged a combination of network capabilities that are available on 5G SA, to offer tailored FWA services with a certain service level agreement. That is becoming a blueprint that can scale to many more networks around the world. This is not about best-effort wireless anymore. This is about best-in-class internet everywhere.”

Spiridoula Sotiropoulou
