Cloud Native for telecom applications is happening now. In the next few years all telecom applications will be cloud natively designed so as to increase efficiency and utilization of the cloud infrastructure.

The main benefits include
  1. Increased speed of software upgrades and releases plus improved granularity.
  2. Enhanced automation through already embedded features in the NFVi layer (Cloud infrastructure for NFV).
  3. Adapted software architecture to make much better use of cloud data center resources.

In the case of 5G, the new ETSI standardized 5G Core functions will be cloud native and container based. This will start already during 2019.

At Ericsson, we will not only base our design on microservices, containers and state optimized design. We have created a set of design principles especially made for telecom applications. To that, we will evolve the NFVi also for containers and add orchestration capabilities.
