In 2016, China Unicom Network Technology Research Institute launched the “China Unicom LTE Three-carrier Aggregation New Technology Test” Project. To support implementation of the project, Ericsson and China Unicom Chengdu Branch carried out trials of continuous three-carrier aggregation in the live network in Chengnan High-Tech Zone of Chengdu. As the first chip supplier to launch a three-carrier aggregation commercial processor, Qualcomm Technologies provided the User Equipment with the latest Qualcomm® SnapdragonTM820 processor with X12 LTE for this trial.
The trial targeted an area of 25 macro base stations for the testing, all of which became available for access on April 12. Upon the start of the field trial at dawn the next day, a downlink peak rate of 375Mbps was immediately reached for single user. Overall, the trial achieved an average rate of 373.7Mbps and specifically, an average 255Mbps downlink rate for single user during road test.
Meanwhile, based on the needs of the local market, Ericsson successfully accomplish three-carrier aggregation on the Ericsson Radio Dot System at China Unicom Sichuan Tianfu Information Center. This is the first three-carrier aggregation achieved with Ericsson Radio Dot System in China, which enriches technical experience, and provides a solution for the deployment of indoor three-carrier aggregation at major buildings of China Unicom.
Dr. Fuchang Li, Senior Expert, China Unicom Network Technology Research Institute, says: “The deployment of carrier aggregation, especially the application of three-carrier aggregation, has great significance to China Unicom. We will be able to focus on our strategy, enhance user experience and deploy large-scale mobile video in the future. China Unicom is very excited to be working together with Ericsson on this trial. It further clarifies the roadmap of LTE network evolution and provides practical experience for the next step of China Unicom to deploy large-scale three-carrier aggregation technology on live network.”
Chenwei Yan, VP of Sales and Product Marketing, Qualcomm Technologies, says: “Qualcomm Technologies has always been a driving force behind carrier aggregation technology and 4G+ global growth. LTE Advanced carrier aggregation technology can help operators maximize the utilization of existing spectrum and fully meet the increasing data demands of consumers. We’re excited to partner with China Unicom and Ericsson to use our Snapdragon processors to further promote the development of 4G+ in China and bring users the outstanding connectivity of the 4G+ network of China Unicom.”
Chris Houghton, Head of region North East Asia, Ericsson, says: “Ericsson is dedicated to helping operator customers around the world to provide excellent LTE network experience. We are honored to join hands with China Unicom in this trial. As one of the important strategic partners of China Unicom, Ericsson, with our advanced technologies, expertise and global scales, is committed to contributing to China Unicom’s 4G strategic focus on building a premium 4G network.”
Ericsson is present today in all high-traffic LTE markets, including the US, China, Japan and South Korea, and is ranked first for handling global LTE traffic. Forty percent of the world’s LTE smart phone traffic is carried over Ericsson networks. More than 250 Ericsson LTE RAN and Evolved Packet Core networks have been delivered worldwide, of which over 190 are live commercially.
