In our continuing series on technology trends that are shaping the future of network platforms, we turn our attention now to new business opportunities that are born through cross industry-society engagements.
IoT platforms bring major opportunities to businesses by enabling a wide range of new digital services. But things will really change when these platforms start working in a truly distributed manner. A distributed IoT is system one in which insights are aggregated from the edge toward the center and a combination of public and on-premise solutions will connect and serve any type of IoT-related service - from near-product to software-as-a-service.
Ericsson’s IoT capabilities that will support this development are end-to-end. For example, our NarrowBand IoT (NB-IoT) is being applied to reduce power consumption and cost in different industry segments and we are investing heavily in the evolution of LTE and 5G to extend the range of addressable IoT use cases and applications. We also have our IoT platform that enables rapid IoT offering deployment, innovation, and ecosystem enablement.
In Taiwan for example, Ericsson is helping Chunghwa Telecom, the island’s largest integrated telecommunications services company, take its first steps toward IoT with a trial of IoT devices and applications in the service provider’s laboratory. And with MTN South Africa, Ericsson supported the first Cat-M1 test implementation of its kind on the African continent.
