Telia Norway recently passed the milestone of 1000 5G sites in Norway as Ericsson continues to support the communications service provider in achieving nationwide 5G coverage by 2023.

The strategic partnership, which has already seen successful trials demonstrate the game-changing capabilities of 5G carrier aggregation, enables Telia Norway to be at the forefront of 5G and continue to set the bar high. The next goal is to add to the 1.5 million Norwegians who already have access to 5G and provide half of the country’s population with 5G coverage this year.

Multiple cities and municipalities around Norway have gained access to Telia’s 5G network since May 2020, when the Norwegian service provider’s first 5G network opened in Lillestrøm. Telia Norway’s subscribers with access to the network will be able to reap the benefits of higher speeds, increased capacity, and better coverage as eastern Norway becomes the next planned recipient of Ericsson and Telia’s 5G ambitions.

Ericsson, as the sole radio access network (RAN) vendor, is also supporting Telia in modernizing the company’s entire mobile network using Ericsson Radio System products and solutions, bringing improved speeds and coverage on the existing 4G network, while doubling the capacity.

Stein-Erik Vellan, CEO, Telia Norway, says: “Together with Ericsson, we’re continuing the successful delivery on our ambitious 5G plans. With almost 9 in 10 living in areas where Telia has more than 90 percent city center 5G coverage (Oslo, Bergen, and Trondheim) stating that they are either satisfied or very satisfied with the mobile network, there is only more good news to come. As more sites appear across the country, more Norwegians and businesses will gain valuable access to the next generation of mobile technology.”

Jenny Lindqvist, Head of Northern & Central Europe, Ericsson, says: “The speed of 5G uptake is higher than in any earlier mobile generation, which is a sign of our industry’s determined effort to drive innovation and bring new technology to the market. In partnership with Telia, we’re delighted to pass the important milestone of 1000 sites upgraded to 5G as it shows the progress in Telia’s aim for a nationwide 5G rollout to enable reliable, high-speed mobile broadband connectivity across Norway.

5G is creating opportunities for people and businesses. Faster connectivity speeds, ultra-low latency and greater bandwidth is advancing societies, transforming industries and dramatically enhancing day-to-day experiences. Applications such as remote surgery, immersive media and factory automation are examples of 5G-powered digitalization starting to materialize with the new generation of mobile network.
