Inventor of the Year award 2022 winners
For over 20 years, our annual Inventor of the Year award has recognized Ericsson researchers and engineers for their outstanding contributions to our growing patent portfolio. With more than 60,000 granted patents, our inventors have established Ericsson as a technology leader in the telecommunications industry. The value created for these patents allows us to keep investing in research to further shape the future of global connectivity. Meet this year’s winners.
Siva Muruganathan
Siva joined Ericsson in 2014, as a researcher for LTE Advanced technologies. Here, he worked on concept development and simulations of 4G advanced technologies. Siva then moved his focus to 5G wireless standardization and became an Ericsson delegate at 3GPP radio access network working group #1. More specifically, his focus has been on multi-antenna communications, mobile broadband and ultra-reliable low-latency communications. Through enabling radio signals to be transmitted from multiple antennas and multiple transmission points, multi-antenna communications have significantly helped to improve the spectral efficiency, coverage and reliability of networks.
Frank Yong Yang
Frank joined Ericsson in 1995, as a service engineer. In 2000, he transferred to Packet Core, a product development unit, and then moved to Gothenburg to continue his research for Packet Core in 2006. In 2009, Frank became an Ericsson delegate for 3GPP CT4 working group and began work in standardization. Frank has specialized in mobile packet core network signaling and restoration mechanisms. In order to build a robust mobile network, Frank has raised a large amount of contributions to 3GPP. Many of these contributions are related to his inventions on signaling optimization in core network and resilience solutions to restore session contexts affected by network failures and overloads.
VISTA Team
The Ericsson Video Codec Research and Standardization (VISTA) team has been a part of Ericsson for over 30 years. The winning team is made up of 10 individuals: Kenneth Andersson, Mitra Damghanian, Jack Enhorn, Christopher Hollmann, Du Liu, Martin Pettersson, Rickard Sjöberg, Jacob Ström, Per Wennersten and Ruoyang Yu. The VISTA team plays a key role in Ericsson’s development and video quality work, focusing on compression and decompression research, which is a crucial component for both the creation and consumption of video content. Video codecs ensure that videos are compressed with a satisfactory quality when played across different broadband, Wi-Fi and mobile connections, making the VISTA team’s work a key part of consumers’ day-to-day lives.
