Speaking at the event on the potential of private networks in Malaysia, Dr Ng Thiaw Seng, Ericsson’s Head of Network Evolution, SEA, Oceania and India, stated,” “High-performance communications are foundational to digital transformation across manufacturing, mining, energy utilities, offshore & processing industries, ports, airports, smart cities, healthcare, and more. Private 4G and 5G networks provide reliable, secure, and agile connectivity to support the adoption, use and scaling of new and emerging, data-driven technologies.”

Given its features of high reliability, low latency and high band width, 5G has tremendous potential to transform industries such as oil and gas, manufacturing, and ports in Malaysia that require low latency, reliable service availability and higher upload speeds.

However, to realize the full potential of 5G, collaboration is required between the Mobile Network Operators, enterprises, equipment vendors and academia to jointly bring use cases from concept to actual deployment and continue to innovate new use cases based on the evolved 5G capabilities.

“The collaboration is needed to explore value created from 5G connectivity towards the enterprise in term of efficiency and total cost of ownership (TCO) savings, revenue improvement and customer experience improvement. 5G networks provide reliable, secure, and agile connectivity to support the adoption, use and scaling of new and emerging, data-driven technologies,” says Dr Ng Thiaw Seng. As transformation programs get underway, the resulting use cases demand the performance of 5G and private networks.

For critical infrastructure industries good reliable coverage, often in remote locations, is essential. Predictive maintenance is a leading use case, with sensors introduced to detect equipment problems early and rectify proactively, pre-empting expensive outages.
