Ericsson and Research In Motion enter a patent license agreement on mobile technology
Under the terms of the worldwide, royalty-bearing agreement, Ericsson has granted Research In Motion a non-exclusive license under Ericsson’s patent portfolio for the GSM, GPRS, EDGE and CDMA2000 mobile telephony standards. This allows Research In Motion to develop, manufacture and sell products in broad, global wireless technology markets using the leading mobile technology from Ericsson. In return, Research In Motion provides royalty payments, as well as a reciprocal license to Ericsson.
The agreement confirms Ericsson’s strong patent portfolio in mobile technology and standards implementation, and specifically gives Research In Motion access to Ericsson’s portfolio of patents - the most extensive in the industry for 2G, 2.5G and 3G. Ericsson has the industry’s strongest R&D commitment with over 10,000 granted patents worldwide.
With this agreement, Ericsson accelerates the development of Mobile Internet and further leverages on our technology leadership and patent portfolio. The Ericsson’s intellectual property rights portfolio is exceptionally strong and is required by any company developing 2G, 2.5G and 3G products.
