"Consumer behavior drives the business as well as the technology development, " said Håkan Eriksson. "Triple play is the trend in the fixed networks, enabled by high data rates. With mobility as a key driver for consumer convenience, we believe triple play is now going mobile - we call this Mobile Triple Play. The evolved version of WCDMA with HSDPA is a key enabler for this, offering mobile broadband with data rates similar to fixed broadband."
Håkan Eriksson underlined the importance of understanding not only consumer behavior, but also operators' business and technology requirements.
"Operators want a trusted partner that can reassure a proven technology roadmap for future updates of their systems, and at the same time provide them with technology that reduce their operating expenses," said Håkan Eriksson.
Building on existing consumer behavior is essential for the success of new applications and this is the obvious reason for the uptake of triple play. Triple play is when we bring together telephony, Internet and broadcasted media, such as TV, in one common infrastructure. The same high bandwidth services that today are provided in the fixed networks are demanded by consumers regardless of time and location - consumers want the independence that mobility offers and the same experience whether being at home, mobile or in the office.
The evolved version of WCDMA, HSDPA, will be a key enabler for Mobile Triple Play in the same way as high speed technology enables triple play in the fixed network environment.
Already mobile TV is happening, in form of broadcasted TV and on-demand TV shows adapted to the mobile screen. Ericsson is developing mobile TV products based on 3G, both for broadcast and unicast.
HSDPA also paves the way for true mobile office usage, enabling applications where high-speed technology is a prerequisite.
Ericsson's leading position in 3G and technology leadership has enabled an early lead in HSDPA. Ericsson was first to demonstrate live HSDPA over a commercial system and we are further demonstrating our leadership in HSDPA at 3GSM World Congress in Cannes.
Mobil Triple Play and converged multimedia services will also put new demands on the core network. Evolution to all-IP service delivery is a natural step of both fixed and mobile communications and IMS is a key component of the operator's long-term network evolution towards all-IP.
"Ericsson's mobile softswitch solution is the first step on the way towards an all IP-core network. By introducing mobile softswitch the operators can evolve smoothly towards IMS and all-IP, while protecting their investments and cut operating expenses by half in the meantime," said Håkan Eriksson.
Ericsson is shaping the future of Mobile and Broadband Internet communications through its continuous technology leadership. Providing innovative solutions in more than 140 countries, Ericsson is helping to create the most powerful communication companies in the world.
